A DC actor hinted that the development of the Peacemaker spin-off show isn’t going smoothly. While Peacemaker, created by James Gunn, began in the previous DC universe (DCEU), it will continue as part of the new DC Universe (DCU) with a second season. The upcoming series Waller, starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller (from Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad), is also expected to transition to the new DCU.
As a big DC fan, I remember when the *Waller* series was first announced as part of James Gunn’s plans for the DC Universe. But honestly, we haven’t heard much about it since then. Steve Agee, who played a key role in *Peacemaker*, recently gave an update, and unfortunately, it doesn’t sound promising. It seems like the show might be stalled, at least according to what he’s been told.
During a discussion on *Phase Hero*, actor James Agee, who portrays ARGUS Agent John Economos in the DC Universe, stated he is unaware of the status of the *Waller* series, and believes that even if it’s moving forward, it’s likely a long way off.
I’m not sure about the Waller project. It’s still being developed, and it was actually an idea before James Gunn took over at DC. I don’t know if Gunn has changed those plans, but even if it’s moving forward, it’s likely a long way off.
The series starring Viola Davis began development in mid-2022, initially as a spin-off of *Peacemaker* on HBO Max. This was before James Gunn became co-CEO of DC Studios and reshaped the DC Universe. The show was later officially named *Waller* and announced as part of the first group of projects for the new DCU in early 2023.
As a big fan of James Gunn’s work, I’ve been following the news about a potential *Waller* series for a while now. He’s confirmed it’s still happening, which is great, but honestly, it’s frustrating that we haven’t gotten any details about when it might come out or what it’s even about since the first announcement. I’m really hoping we get some updates soon!
Fans know at least one thing about the new series: Agee’s character will be included. Gunn announced this in a social media post last April, highlighting the actor’s roles in *Peacemaker*, *The Suicide Squad*, and the upcoming *Waller* project (according to Home of DCU).
The upcoming series, *Waller*, will continue the story of Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis), the tough and uncompromising former director of ARGUS. It’s set after the events of *The Suicide Squad*, both seasons of *Peacemaker*, and *Creature Commandos*. While Waller recently appeared in *Creature Commandos* Season 1 as part of the new DC Universe continuity, details about her own series’ plot are still being kept secret.
What Is Happening with DC Studios’ Waller Series?
For years, the status of the *Waller* series has been a mystery within DC Studios. Though announced early on as one of James Gunn’s first projects for the new DC Universe, development has seemed to move slowly, at least based on what the public has seen.
It’s not just *Waller* that’s stalled from the first group of announced projects. *The Authority* and *The Brave and the Bold* haven’t been progressing quickly either. But *Waller* is a bit of an outlier, as it’s been in development for a much longer time than those other titles.
Considering the Viola Davis-led DC series started development before James Gunn’s DCU was announced, many expected it to be well underway. Surprisingly, that doesn’t appear to be true, and its earlier start might actually be causing delays.
Besides Season 2 of *Peacemaker*, *Waller* appears to be the only DC project James Gunn continued from the previous DC leadership. While he wasn’t obligated to pursue the *Peacemaker* spin-off after taking charge of DC Studios, he chose to do so.
It’s possible the team behind the project is attempting to adjust the *Waller* story to fit into the new DC Universe, and they’re still refining it to get it just right.
If this situation continues for much longer, Gunn and the DC Studios team might decide to drop the project altogether and find another way to include Davis’ character in the story.
If the DCU team is determined to move forward with this project, they’ll keep developing the character of Waller until she’s fully prepared for a major release.
