HBO is known for its high-quality, dramatic series, but it hadn’t recently produced a funny, character-driven comedy – until now. Following the disappointing reception of *The Idol*, HBO is trying a new approach to the themes of fame and extravagance, this time with a comedic bent. Their new series, *I Love LA*, is coming next month, and the recently released trailer suggests it will be a lot of fun.
As a huge fan of Rachel Sennott’s work in films like *Bottoms* and *Bodies, Bodies, Bodies*, I’m so excited about her new show, *I Love LA*! She’s quickly become known for her really sharp, funny takes on things, and this show seems to be right in that wheelhouse. Even better, it’s her first time directing! We don’t know a ton about the story yet, but the trailer looks fantastic. It’s confirmed for eight episodes in the first season and, from what I’ve heard, it’s got an amazing cast – a great mix of familiar faces and new talent. I can’t wait!
I Love LA Stars Rachel Sennott, Josh Hutcherson, And Leighton Meester
In the first glimpse of the new series, I Love LA, Maia confidently states, “Hustle until your idols become your rivals,” only to be denied a promotion by her boss, played by Leighton Meester—who sounds remarkably similar to her famous character Blair from Gossip Girl. Things take a turn when Maia comes home to find Tallulah (Odessa A’zion), an old friend, waiting for her. Tallulah is unpredictable and driven, and, as Maia’s boyfriend Dylan (Josh Hutcherson) observes, she tends to bring out the worst in her.
The show centers on a group of friends – including Maia, Charlie, and Alani – who have a complicated and unhealthy dynamic. They know exactly how to push each other’s buttons, and their reunion quickly spirals into chaos as their individual goals clash with a backdrop of parties, drugs, and personal issues. As they chase their dreams around Los Angeles, they start acting at their worst, though it appears outwardly as a glamorous and wild time. *I Love LA* examines their messy relationships and how far they’ll go for fame and fortune, offering a sharp critique of influencer culture and its impact on society. Expect quick-witted conversations, outrageous behavior, and biting satire throughout the series.
It’s strangely enjoyable to watch people at their worst, and this show is full of characters who aren’t trying to be good. From wild behavior in public to desperate attempts at success, *I Love LA* revels in outrageousness. It’s reminiscent of Lena Dunham’s previous work, known for its flawed characters and complicated friendships.
The lives of Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna were closely connected in the show *Girls*, and their attempts to figure out adulthood often led to messy and hurtful behavior as they competed with each other. *Girls* became a huge hit thanks to its memorable characters and compelling storylines, though many felt the show lost some steam towards the end. Now, *I Love LA* aims to capture that same magic, but with a modern twist – it satirizes internet culture and explores how social media shapes friendships and careers in 2025, including the often-unwritten rules of being constantly online.
The new show will debut on November 2, 2025, and will be available to stream on HBO Max. Instead of releasing all episodes at once, however, new episodes will be released weekly until December 21, 2025. This slower release strategy is making a comeback, and some believe it could be a great way to experience television. The cast also includes Moses Ingram, Lauren Holt, Elijah Wood, Quenlin Blackwell, Josh Brener, Tim Baltz, Froy Gutierrez, and Colin Woodell, who all appeared in the official trailer.
