Comic book movies are hugely popular in today’s film industry, with superhero films like those from the Marvel Cinematic Universe leading the way. But not all movies based on comics are about superheroes; comic books explore many different genres, and several intriguing stories could become big-screen hits. Adapting a comic into a successful movie is challenging, particularly if the original comic isn’t famous. As a result, many comic book movies haven’t received much attention.
Lots of excellent superhero movies never got the sequels they deserved and have faded into obscurity. The same is true for great comic book adaptations – many didn’t receive the attention they earned, whether due to lacking big stars, being overlooked for their entertainment value, or simply not getting enough credit for their impact on the genre. It’s disappointing that so many comic book movies are underappreciated, and it’s frustrating that some truly fantastic adaptations haven’t been discovered by fans.
3) The Rocketeer (1991)
The Rocketeer is a relatively unknown character who first appeared in 1982, inspired by the adventure heroes popular in 1930s and 40s serials. A film adaptation came out in 1991, starring Billy Campbell alongside Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, and Paul Sorvino. The story centers on Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who finds a jetpack and becomes The Rocketeer, much to the frustration of villains around the globe.
Released in 1991, *The Rocketeer* doesn’t have the same slickness as today’s superhero films. But its original story and setting make it one of the best comic book movies of the 1990s, and it clearly influenced the superhero movies we see now. Despite being largely forgotten because of its lesser-known origins and disappointing performance in theaters, *The Rocketeer* is a fantastic film that deserves more attention.
2) Mystery Men (1999)
While some superhero movies instantly feel like classics, the 1999 film *Mystery Men* quickly earns that title in its own unique way. It’s a funny and clever take on the superhero genre, and that actually *adds* to how good it is. The movie centers around a group of less-than-perfect heroes who have to save the day when the city’s main hero is taken out of commission. The cast is full of popular comedic actors from the late 90s, including Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Janeane Garofalo, and Paul Reubens, alongside well-known names like Greg Kinnear and Geoffrey Rush.
Despite being based on a lesser-known comic, *Mystery Men* is a genuinely funny and visually striking film. Its unique characters and outlandish concepts are brought to life with fantastic sets and costumes. It’s a surprisingly great superhero movie that many have forgotten, offering consistently clever, self-aware humor that playfully mocks the genre while still telling a captivating story. Don’t let its quirky nature fool you – *Mystery Men* is a must-see for comic book fans.
1) The Losers (2010)
While plenty of excellent movies are based on comic books and *don’t* feature superheroes, they often get overlooked in favor of bigger, more famous superhero films. The 2010 movie *The Losers* is a good example – the original comic book wasn’t very well known. Based on a Vertigo comic series (which itself came from an older DC comic set during World War II), *The Losers* showcased a remarkably talented up-and-coming cast. The film starred Jeffrey Dean Morgan, along with Zoe Saldaña, Chris Evans, and Idris Elba.
The Losers is a fun, action-packed comedy about a team of highly skilled ex-Special Forces operatives. While it didn’t receive rave reviews, the movie stands out for its surprisingly realistic action sequences – a departure from many typical comic book adaptations. Despite this, it’s gained a dedicated following, proving that even well-made comic book movies with strong casts can sometimes be overlooked.
