Grey State Studio and Tencent Games are creating a new free-to-play horror shooter called *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State*. Currently planned for release on PC in 2026, the game will be available in China through WeGame, and everywhere else via Steam and the Epic Games Store. You can watch the announcement trailer below.
I just watched the reveal trailer for *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State*, and while it doesn’t show much actual gameplay, it definitely gives you a feel for the game’s vibe. It looks like we’ll be using really realistic weapons and gear to fight off some seriously creepy monsters – they’re pulling inspiration from all sorts of horror stuff, which is awesome. It’s going to be a co-op game for up to three of us, and even though the trailer didn’t show any player-versus-player action, the developers have confirmed it’s a PvPvE extraction shooter, so there’ll be both fighting monsters *and* other players to contend with!
In *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State*, players will face a diverse array of enemies, ranging from terrifying cosmic horrors reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft to bizarre, modern creatures that blend flesh and metal. The game’s developers at Grey State Studio call the setting a “unique Horrorverse,” suggesting it draws inspiration from all corners of the horror genre.
The game *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State* promises a terrifying experience filled with monsters drawn from various sources like films, books, and online horror stories. According to the developer, it won’t be a single, contained horror tale, but rather a universe encompassing all sorts of nightmares.
In this game, you play as a Strider, a highly skilled operative working for a mysterious organization. You’ll be sent into The Grey State – a dangerous dimension full of terrifying creatures and strange objects – on a mission to recover a valuable artifact called The Vertex. You’ll need to cooperate with your friends to succeed.
The upcoming game, *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State*, will soon have an early playtest. Players will be able to try out three different classes: Sledge, Pyro, and Phantom. Sledge is a powerful, heavily armored character wielding a shield and hammer. Pyro focuses on controlling the battlefield with fire and gas. And Phantom is a stealthy assassin who eliminates enemies from the shadows.
I’m really excited about *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State*! The developers, Grey State Studio, have said it’s going to be free-to-play, which is awesome. But they’ve also promised that you won’t be able to just *buy* your way to being stronger. Everything that makes your character better, you’ll have to earn through playing the game – they’re only selling cosmetic items, which is great news for a fair playing field!
Currently, there’s no news about whether *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State* will be released on consoles.
