It’s unlikely there will be any future Saints Row games after the 2022 reboot failed to gain traction. However, the person who originally led the game’s design is open to trying again if given the opportunity.
I just read a really in-depth interview with Chris Stockman, one of the main people behind the original Saints Row games, over at Esports Insider. He shared a ton of his thoughts – seriously, *a lot* – about the Saints Row series, what he thinks about the upcoming GTA 6, and the whole gaming industry right now. It was a fascinating read!
We’ve been paying attention to what Stockman had to say about the new Saints Row game. And, as you might have guessed, he wasn’t very impressed with it.
As soon as I heard they were making a new Saints Row game, I talked to a former boss from the original. He was the producer on Saints Row 1, and after learning about their plans, I immediately thought it was a mistake,” Stockman confessed.
He questioned the game’s purpose, asking why it was being rebooted, a sentiment that mirrored the concerns of many fans when the game was first announced.
Honestly, as a fan, this new game just doesn’t feel like Saints Row at all. It’s got so many characters people are connecting with, but it’s built something totally different. I had certain expectations for what a Saints Row game should be, and it really didn’t deliver on any of them. They should have just made a new series, honestly.
Stockman suggests that if he’d been in charge, he would have set a new game in the 1970s. He envisions a story following the teenage characters who would eventually become the heroes of the first game, complete with 70s fashion like Afros and bell-bottoms, and music from the era.
We must admit, that does sound like a laugh.
He explained that he would have approached the game differently to avoid directly competing with modern GTA titles. His idea was to be unique and stand out from the crowd, doing the opposite of what everyone else was doing.
Why hasn’t Mike Stockman returned to work on the Saints Row series? He’s been running his own studio, Bit Planet Games, which focuses on virtual reality games, since 2014.
Despite the challenges, Stockman expressed strong interest in reviving the Saints Row franchise. He directly appealed to Embracer Group, offering to lead the project and reassemble key members of the original development team. He believes a reasonable budget would be enough to turn the IP around, and he’s even confident he could secure funding from outside sources if Embracer isn’t willing to invest.
There’s a small chance for Saints Row fans to be excited: Stockman has expressed interest in potentially bringing the game to virtual reality.
I even considered suggesting a Saints Row VR game to my contacts at Meta. I believe that with upcoming technology, an open-world game could be feasible, but it would need a very distinct, stylized look. We wouldn’t be aiming to rival GTA—and honestly, I don’t think anyone can compete with GTA these days, he says.
What are your thoughts on what Stockman said? Are you hoping to see a new Saints Row game in the future? If so, what features or changes would you like to see in a potential revival? Share your opinions respectfully in the comments below!
