Building on the success of the first game, The Outer Worlds 2 is planned to be an enhanced experience with improvements to the game’s core mechanics.
The new game includes something that was missing from the first one.
This is none other than third-person view.
Game director Brandon Adler recently told GameInformer that the team didn’t initially plan to include a third-person camera option when they first started developing the game.
So, I was reading an interview with the dev, Alder, and he said they didn’t originally plan for a third-person view when they started building the game. Apparently, adding it now would be super costly, but they’re thinking about it for the next game, which is good news for those of us who prefer that perspective!
Interestingly, Obsidian didn’t actually create the third-person perspective themselves. They partnered with a different studio, Disruptive, to handle that specific task.
How the Third-Person Camera Came to Be in Outer Worlds 2
The team began working on The Outer Worlds 2 about two years ago, with development officially starting in September 2019.
It took Obsidian about four years to finally include a third-person viewing option.
According to Adler, they realized around the middle of the project that people would likely find it valuable, so they then assessed how challenging it would be to actually build.
Adding this feature is challenging because the team is already juggling multiple priorities. They also need to stay within their existing budget and finish on time.
As the project progressed, the team decided to include the feature to show appreciation for the community’s support.
This is a welcome addition, and early looks at trailers and gameplay suggest The Outer Worlds 2 will be a significant improvement and expansion upon the original game.

Obsidian is aiming to improve on what players loved about the original Outer Worlds, adding fresh content and making some welcome adjustments along the way.
Developing the game’s third-person perspective needed significant resources, so they brought in another studio to handle that part.
Plenty of gameplay footage and trailers for the game are already available. Fans are eager to see how it builds on the previous installment, though some remain cautious because of issues with the last game.
We’ll have to wait until the game is released to see how well it plays and how smoothly the third-person perspective works.
The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled to release this October 29, 2025 on PC, Xbox, and PS5.
