Shakespeare and Hathaway future confirmed – just 3 weeks after season 5 release

The popular detective series, Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators, is coming back for a sixth season! The good news was announced while season five is still airing on U&Alibi.

Production for the new season began this week in Stratford-Upon-Avon. It will first air on U&alibi in 2026, followed by a release on BBC and iPlayer.

Mark Benton and Jo Joyner will return for the sixth season, which follows Sebastian Brudenell, played by Patrick Walshe McBride, as he lands his ideal acting job in Los Angeles. To help him, he calls on a friend he met while training at RADA.

Aruhan Galieva (known from Doctor Who) joins the cast as Bea Gardiner, a new and energetic assistant who will be a welcome addition to the team.

Joyner expressed her excitement about returning for the sixth series of the show, filmed in Warwickshire with Mark. She described playing her character, Luella, as wonderfully comfortable and enjoyable – like wearing a bright, cozy pair of pink slippers – and anticipates more puzzling mysteries for Lu to solve.

Benton shared his excitement about the show being renewed for a sixth season, saying he was ‘thrilled.’ He described the series as something truly special, highlighting his great working relationship with Jo, the fantastic crew, and the heartwarming, funny, and intriguing storylines. He called it a ‘joy’ to work on.

Created by Paul Matthew Thompson and the late Jude Tindall, the series centers around Frank Hathaway, a tough former police officer, and Lu Shakespeare, a kindhearted ex-hairdresser, who team up as private investigators.

Each episode features the pair working as detectives in the historic streets of Stratford-upon-Avon, investigating exciting and disturbing crimes.

After a three-year gap following season four, the show returned for its fifth season with a new funding arrangement. This season was jointly produced by BBC Content and UKTV, marking a change from the show’s original run as a BBC daytime program.

Joyner added that the show has attracted a wonderful fanbase, which is really heartening. It’s reassuring to see people enjoy something positive instead of just being drawn to dark or violent content. Especially as the show gets more serious, it’s incredibly rewarding to know people still appreciate it, and I’m really pleased about that.
