Team Ninja is busy with multiple projects: *Ninja Gaiden 4* comes out next week, and they’re also developing *Nioh 3*, planned for release next year. *Nioh 3* will evolve the series with changes like larger, more open levels (though not fully open-world) and the ability to instantly switch between Samurai and Ninja combat styles.
Even though things evolve, many core elements stay consistent, and that’s true for the new difficulty level unlocked after completing the game. Producer Kohei Shibata told WCCF Tech they’ve included this feature – increasing the difficulty on a second playthrough – as a series tradition for *Nioh*.
Like many games similar to Dark Souls, *Nioh* lets you start a New Game Plus after finishing it, keeping your character’s levels, weapons, and unlocked items. However, *Nioh*’s New Game Plus modes are more challenging and have special additions. For instance, in both *Nioh 1* and *Nioh 2*, the ‘Way of the Strong’ or NG+ mode introduces powerful Divine Equipment.
It’s currently unknown if more difficulty options will be available when *Nioh 3* releases or if they’ll be added later. *Nioh 3* comes out on February 6th, 2026, for both PlayStation 5 and PC. You can find the newest gameplay footage here.
