Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Shards Explained (and What to Use Them for)

Pokémon Legends: Z-A immediately puts you in the middle of the action as soon as you arrive. Your rival helps you explore Lumiose City for the first hour or so, explaining everything you need to know. The beginning of the game acts as a tutorial, and you’ll follow your rival’s guidance to learn about Wild Zones and Battle Zones. You’ll also discover Mega Crystals, which you can break down into Mega Shards. While you find these shards early on, the game doesn’t immediately reveal what they’re actually used for.

Lumiose City is full of Mega Crystals – easy-to-find clusters of pink, rock-like formations that seem to contain Mega Energy. These crystals are connected to a worrying increase in uncontrolled Mega Evolutions, and you’re asked to destroy them whenever you see one. Doing so earns you Mega Shards and a little experience for your Pokémon. While getting extra experience and helping the city is great, collecting Mega Shards is important for other reasons as well.

Where to Exchange Mega Shards in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Early in the game, you’ll encounter clusters of Mega Shards and your rival will mention that people collect them. It’s not immediately clear *where* to turn them in for rewards, but don’t worry – you’ll be able to use them later on. It’s a good idea to collect Mega Shards whenever you find them while exploring. You get these shards simply by having your Pokémon attack and break the clusters – any damaging move will do!

You can trade in your Mega Shards once you progress far enough in the game. After you unlock the Quasartico Inc. building, you’ll be able to use your collected Mega Shards. A staff member at the front desk will exchange them for useful items, including Mega Stones (which allow certain Pokémon to Mega Evolve) and Experience Candy S, to help your Pokémon level up faster.

Mega Stones are currently available for 180 Mega Shards each. If you don’t need any Mega Evolutions right now, you can purchase Exp. Candy Small for just 8 Mega Shards apiece. This is a great way to quickly level up a Pokémon you get later on – I used it a lot with my Eevees!

Quasartico Inc.’s Mega Stone Supply Will Grow Over Time

You might notice that Quasartico Inc. doesn’t have every Mega Stone available right away. This is because some Mega Stones can’t be obtained by trading Mega Shards – you’ll need to defeat specific Mega Evolved Pokémon or purchase them from the Stone Emporium in Lumiose City. Also, just like the Wild Zones, the number of Mega Stones available at Quasaritco Inc. will grow over time as more become available.

From time to time, you’ll receive a text on your Rotom Phone letting you know that more Mega Stones are now available. These usually include stones for Mega Evolutions you’ve recently seen during your gameplay. This is a way for *Legends: Z-A* to avoid revealing all the new Mega Evolutions right away, as some are discovered through boss battles. If you’re looking for a specific Mega Stone at Quasartico Inc. and don’t see it, it might become available later, either in their stock or as a reward from a special Rogue Mega Evolution battle.
