Arnold Schwarzenegger is far more than just a star of science fiction action movies. His film *The Terminator* is a defining movie of the 1980s and launched a hugely successful series. He also starred in the 1987 hit *Predator*, which similarly spawned a popular and ongoing franchise. But beyond his most famous roles, there are some lesser-known films he’s been in – including a surprisingly good one from the 1990s that you might not have seen, but can now watch on Prime Video.
Released in 1999, *End of Days* is an action-horror film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger alongside Gabriel Byrne, Robin Tunney, Kevin Pollak, Rod Steiger, and CCH Pounder. The movie pushes Schwarzenegger into unfamiliar territory as he plays a troubled ex-cop drawn into a supernatural conflict. He must protect a young woman, Christine (Tunney), who is destined to give birth to the antichrist. It’s a bizarre and unique story, a departure from Schwarzenegger’s typical roles.
End of Days Is Schwarzenegger Action At Its Most Human
When *End of Days* came out, critics weren’t impressed – it only has an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received three Razzie Award nominations, including one for Schwarzenegger as Worst Actor. However, the film shouldn’t be dismissed. While the plot – a somewhat complicated battle between good and evil at the turn of the millennium – can feel forced, Schwarzenegger delivers one of his most vulnerable performances. He plays Jericho Cane as a deeply troubled and damaged man struggling with intense grief and trauma. This makes his task of protecting a young woman from Satan, while battling his own demons and numerous enemies, all the more challenging.
What truly sets *End of Days* apart from typical sci-fi or horror action movies is its surprising emotional depth. The film’s story of Jericho fighting evil isn’t just about saving the world, but also about his personal faith and a reflection on what’s right and wrong. It moves beyond simple action entertainment into a more thoughtful experience. The film cleverly uses the Y2K anxieties of 1999 – being set on New Year’s Eve with a midnight deadline for Satan’s plans – and this element still resonates powerfully today. That makes *End of Days* a great watch this fall, especially now that it’s available on Prime Video.
End of Days is now streaming on Prime Video.
