Embark Studios’ game, *ARC Raiders*, is launching later this month, and its recent server test has been very popular with excited players. This test is similar to a successful one from last April, which led some to believe the game might be released unexpectedly at Summer Game Fest. However, the developers decided to wait, feeling the game wasn’t quite finished.
In a recent PC Gamer interview, design director Virgil Watkins discussed the reaction to their game’s playtest. He noted that many players immediately wanted the game cancelled, or expected it to be shortly after the test. However, Watkins explained that the game was simply not finished yet. While pleased players thought the game ran smoothly, he emphasized there was still significant optimization and feature development needed, along with several bugs to fix – thankfully, most weren’t prominently visible in playtest footage. They had a lot of work left to do.
Watkins also mentioned that even though players liked the game, data showed some balancing issues needed addressing. The team is also creating new content, including a new map.
Since the last tech test, we’ve added a new map and given a sneak peek at a fifth one, which players will be able to experience shortly after the game launches, though in a unique way. We’re also expanding our item and enemy collections and adding new map features. Players saw some of this, like the night raids, in the previous test, and we’re building on that to create more diverse gameplay options.
The development of *ARC Raiders* has faced several changes. Originally planned as a free-to-play co-op shooter in 2021, it later became a paid, extraction-style game with both player-versus-environment and player-versus-player combat. The game was also delayed for three years because the developers felt it wasn’t enjoyable enough in its early stages.
ARC Raiders will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC starting October 30th, and it will cost $39.99. You can find more information about how the game handles character progress resets on their website.
