Although the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S have been available for five years, Sony is still the dominant player in the console market. Surprisingly, the PlayStation 4 – a previous generation console – remains the PS5’s biggest competitor. Nicolas Doucet, head of Team Asobi, recently suggested that PS4 owners should think about upgrading to the newer PS5.
Nicolas Doucet, the creative behind the popular game Astro Bot, explains that even though games on the late PlayStation 4 and early PlayStation 5 don’t always look drastically different, the PS5’s new features are a significant upgrade. He highlights the DualSense controller – with its immersive haptic feedback and adaptive triggers – and the faster game loading times thanks to the PS5’s solid-state drive, which is much quicker than the PS4’s hard drive.
According to Doucet, the visual difference between a game made for the older PS4 and a newer PS5 game isn’t always obvious at first glance. However, the team quickly realized the potential of the PS5’s DualSense controller. They experimented with its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, exploring how they could create more immersive experiences by simulating actions like pulling, breaking, or crushing objects. They thoroughly tested these possibilities early in the PS5’s development.
After experiencing the new system, you really start to notice the improvements. While there are significant changes, they aren’t as immediately noticeable as the jump to HD graphics – that was something you could see instantly. The controller is different; you need to actually use it to understand how it feels and what’s changed.
The PS5’s faster storage means a big improvement in game quality, especially for games with frequent loading screens. For example, in games like the Souls series by FromSoftware, players die often, and each time they respawn, a loading screen appears. The PS5 significantly reduces the wait time in these situations.
According to Doucet, the PlayStation 5 introduced some truly remarkable features. He highlighted the DualSense controller and the fast SSD as key improvements. Specifically, he noted that the SSD drastically reduced loading times in games like the Souls series, where players frequently die and restart. This faster loading, he explained, significantly enhances the overall enjoyment of playing.
When it comes to gaming, Doucet pointed out that the PS5 has an edge over PC because developers only need to optimize for one specific set of hardware. This lets them concentrate on the game itself, rather than spending time ensuring it works across many different computer configurations. He explained, “That’s always been a big benefit of consoles for me.”
