I might be looking at it through rose-colored glasses, but there’s just something really great about Tom Hanks in his ’80s movies. He’s had an amazing career with lots of awards, but I especially love how relatable and funny he was in those earlier roles. While he’s charming in Big and hilarious in films like The Money Pit, Bachelor Party, and Turner & Hooch, I think The ‘Burbs from 1989 is one of his funniest movies. With Halloween right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to watch, and it’s currently available to stream for free!

Suburban Hijinks Ensues
Okay, if you haven’t seen The ‘Burbs, you’re missing out! It’s a really fun black comedy directed by Joe Dante β the guy who did Gremlins β and it stars Tom Hanks. The story is about a guy just trying to enjoy a quiet staycation with his wife, Carol (played by the awesome Carrie Fisher), but things quickly get weird when this strange new family moves onto the street. He ends up getting mixed up with the neighborhood busybodies, and they all start trying to figure out what the new family is up to. Let me tell you, it really escalates from there! It’s one of those movies where you start questioning who you should actually be worried about β the newcomers or the people snooping around trying to find out their secrets.
While Tom Hanks is a big part of what makes this movie so funny, he’s not the only reason it works. The film boasts a fantastic supporting cast including Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern as a proud war veteran, Rick Ducommun as a mischievous friend, Corey Feldman as a nosy teenage neighbor, and Wendy Schaal, Henry Gibson, Brother Theodore, and Courtney Gains. Hanks is especially hilarious as a man who’s just trying to relax with a drink and his new tools. His character gets pulled into his friends’ overly enthusiastic attempts to get to know the new neighbors, and things quickly descend into chaos.
If you enjoy watching Tom Hanks hilariously lose his cool and go a little crazy on screen, then you absolutely have to see The ‘Burbs.
While The Burbs Isn’t A Horror, It Does Have A Spooky, Suspenseful Tone
Is The ‘Burbs scary? While it has some horror aspects, it’s more of a dark comedy, so calling it a full-on horror movie would be a stretch. If you’re looking for true horror β or even a really good horror comedy β there are better choices. However, The ‘Burbs is a fun watch, especially around Halloween, if you want something lighthearted instead of genuinely frightening. It’s a solid comedy, particularly if you enjoy Tom Hanks’ work or comedies from the 80s, and since it’s often available for free, it’s a great deal.
This movie is rated PG, so it might be suitable for families, but it does have some potentially frightening parts. Younger children could be scared by a spooky dream, a disturbing story about a man who committed a terrible crime, and the unsettling behavior of some neighbors.
The ‘Burbs Remake Is Coming To Peacock As A TV Series
Fans of the movie The ‘Burbs will be excited to hear it’s being revived as a TV series on Peacock. Keke Palmer is set to star in and help produce the show, though a premiere date hasn’t been announced yet. If you have a Peacock subscription, keep an eye out for it!
