The open-world zombie game Days Gone, originally released by Bend Studio in 2019 for PlayStation, recently received a new update for PS5. The game focuses on survival as you ride a motorcycle across Oregon searching for a lost loved one amidst a zombie apocalypse. While it offered a fresh and enjoyable take on the zombie genre, the game had several problems when it first launched, which negatively impacted initial reviews and discouraged some players.
People familiar with the project say PlayStation executives weren’t enthusiastic about turning Days Gone into a long-running series, which is a key reason why a sequel was never made. Bend Studio, the team behind Days Gone, is now focusing on different projects. They haven’t released a new game since Days Gone, and several other ideas they’ve worked on have been cancelled. For example, the studio was once developing a new Uncharted game with guidance from Naughty Dog, but it didn’t progress much beyond the initial stages.
Days Gone Remastered May Be Preparing for PlayStation’s Handheld
Despite being released a while ago, Days Gone continues to receive occasional updates. Earlier this year, Days Gone Remastered launched on PS5, offering improved graphics and performance which fans appreciated. The latest update is simple: it adds support for PS5 and PS5 Pro’s Power Saver mode. This mode lets the console conserve energy by slightly reducing game performance, such as lowering the frame rate and resolution.
People are wondering why a feature like this exists on the PS5. It seems unlikely many players are focused on saving that much power. However, the current thinking is that this setting is actually preparing games for a future PlayStation handheld, likely to launch with the PS6. Developers appear to be designing games to run with lower performance settings, making them suitable for a less powerful handheld device.
Everything is just a possibility at this point, but it seems logical. We probably won’t know for sure for some time, but if it turns out to be true, it looks like Days Gone could potentially be playable on a future PlayStation handheld device.
