Lazarus ending explained: What does Laz find out about his father’s death?

When Joel Lazarus (Sam Claflin) learned of his father’s (Bill Nighy) suicide, he became consumed with uncovering the truth about what happened. He soon found himself reliving his father’s memories as if they were his own.

This six-episode show centers on Laz as he tries to understand what happened before his father died. Strange, supernatural events begin to occur as soon as Laz enters his father’s workplace.

Laz was starting to understand his father’s work and who his clients were, and he suspected Arlo Jones, a past client with a history of violence, might be responsible for Dr. L’s murder. However, when Arlo mentioned someone else, it sent Laz in a new direction with his investigation.

I was completely hooked by Prime Video’s Lazarus, and the biggest mystery – what happened to Joel’s dad? – finally gets answered in the last episode. Trust me, you’ll want to see how it all unfolds!

Lazarus ending explained: What does Laz find out about his father’s death?

Laz believes his father’s death wasn’t natural and suspects he was murdered. He thinks he’s uncovered evidence pointing to serial killer Arlo Jones, but Arlo reveals a surprising connection: Detective Alison Brown (Kate Ashfield).

Laz, aware that Alison is Seth’s boss, shares his findings about her with Seth in private. He’s discovered Alison wasn’t truthful – she claimed to know nothing about an old case that Laz had details on, but Laz found evidence she was actually the lead detective. Immediately distrustful, Laz tells Seth, who is hesitant to confront his boss, leading to a brief fight between them. However, after reviewing the evidence, both Seth and Laz are shown preparing to confront Alison.

Laz reveals to her that both the Arlo case and the murder of Imogen Carswood (who was secretly Virge Gilchrist) connect back to his father. Arlo was one of his patients, and Imogen was having an affair with Dr. L. They weren’t the only ones involved; Laz explains that Father Frank (Keith Bartlett) made a video before he died, claiming he was innocent and identifying the true killer as still being free. This video was never made public, but somehow ended up with Alison.

Okay, so here’s my take: Laz believes Alison was actively targeting patients at Dr. L’s office – people she saw as easily manipulated – and falsely accusing them of committing violent acts. This eventually led to a major blow-up with Dr. L himself, and Laz is convinced it escalated to the point where she killed him. It’s a pretty damning accusation, painting Alison as manipulative and ultimately, a murderer.

Alison asks Seth for water, and though we don’t see the full interaction with Laz, she ends up knocking him over and then using a taser on Seth. Laz pursues her in his car, and the chase continues on foot after she crashes. Running through the street, Alison trips over a bicycle and is tragically struck and killed by a bus.

Then, we see Laz recalling his last conversation with Alison, in which she urges him to move on and gives him a cassette tape. He found the tape in her pocket at the crime scene and kept it.

Aidan visits Laura to discuss his father, Laz. Their conversation touches on secrets and promises, but we only see a small part of what they discuss.

Laz brought the tape back to his father’s office and played it, shocked to hear Alison challenging Dr. L. The recording revealed a tense conversation where Alison confronted Dr. L about their actions, expressing her guilt. However, Dr. L dismissed her feelings, calling guilt a pointless emotion.

It’s now evident that Dr. L and Alison worked together for years to exploit the system. Dr. L thought certain patients were dangerous and, to keep them confined, manipulated Alison into falsely connecting them to crimes.

Alison, despite receiving numerous awards and recognition, has come to disagree with Dr. L’s methods. She directly accuses him of murdering Imogen, and he shockingly admits it, claiming he did so out of a misguided belief that he was ending her pain. Alison then understands that everything Dr. L has told her has been a lie, designed to hide his own involvement in the crime and mislead investigators.

Alison refused to drop the issue, and it quickly became apparent she’d come prepared. She gave Dr. L a gun, suggesting he write a suicide note – a way to keep his secrets hidden forever. Though he briefly considered it, pointing the gun at Alison, he ultimately couldn’t go through with it and agreed to her plan instead.

He thinks about Sutton and hopes to see her again after death, seemingly accepting his fate. Although Alison expresses a desire for a different outcome, Dr. L insists there are no other options and asks to be left alone. He attempts to call Joel, but Joel ignores the call while focused on work. Distraught, Dr. L writes a note and then takes his own life.

Currently, Laz is visited by his father’s ghost and demands answers about the murders. Dr. L reveals that Alison was his killer, and surprisingly, seems to justify his own violent actions, claiming they ultimately protected them. The two then have an emotional conversation about their love for each other, with Dr. L expressing the worry that sons often repeat their fathers’ mistakes. He then bids Laz a final farewell.

A series of quick scenes reveals the final outcomes for each character, though they all seem resolute and emotionally closed off. Laz shows his sister, Jenna, his father’s suicide note, telling her it’s finished. He looks relieved as he heads to find Laura.

Has Laz been imagining things all along?

After Laz leaves, Jenna discovers several boxes of tapes in his room – recordings of their father. It’s obvious Laz has been listening to them, and Jenna joins him, listening to tapes featuring Arlo, Cassandra, and others.

This makes you wonder if everything he went through was just a product of his imagination.

It’s clear Laz has been fantasizing about conversations with his father and old patients, but it increasingly seems he’s actually been staying in his room, replaying recordings instead of attending his sessions with Dr. L.

What happens at the end with Laz and Aidan?

Laz walked to Laura’s house and found the door unlocked. He went inside and called for her, but when he didn’t get a response, he began searching for her.

The living room looked like a fight had taken place, and it was obvious something was wrong. He turned and saw Aidan standing in the doorway, holding a curved knife. Aidan stared at Laz and simply said, “I’m sorry.”

Okay, so Aidan definitely assaulted Laura – that much is clear. But whether she survived? That’s where the show really left us hanging. It’s a classic cliffhanger, and honestly, it’s got me desperate to see what happens next.
