If you’re an Xbox enthusiast hoping for more exclusive games, you might not like this: Xbox leader Sarah Bond has made it clear the company doesn’t intend to return to making games only available on their platforms.
In a recent interview with Mashable, she explained that the most popular games are now widely available on all platforms, and limiting games to specific systems is becoming outdated.
She said:
Popular games like Call of Duty, Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox are what truly build gaming communities. People want to connect and play together, so limiting games to a single store or device feels outdated. Players want the freedom to connect with friends and play together, no matter what platform they’re using.
Even though the question was about major, exclusive games, Bond’s answer focused more on games that are continuously updated with new content, and it’s a fair point.
Now that Helldivers 2 has become incredibly popular on PlayStation 5 and PC, Sony has clearly decided to also release it on Xbox Series X|S.
We’ve recently seen the game Ghost of Yotei perform surprisingly well in US sales, despite being available only on PlayStation 5. Nintendo likely disagrees with Mr. Bond’s statements, given this success.
Indeed, exclusives still have a role to play when it comes to moving hardware.
We believe Microsoft likely agrees with this idea. While the new Forza Horizon 6 is confirmed to come to PlayStation, it will be released after the versions for Xbox and PC – probably so Microsoft can sell more copies on its own platforms first.
We generally agree with Bond’s point, but given Microsoft’s current shift away from making hardware, it’s not surprising to hear this response.
Just a few years ago, the company had a very different attitude, as demonstrated by their decision to cancel the PlayStation 5 version of Starfield.
