Although Battlefield 2042 wasn’t a critical success, it did introduce Portal Mode, which quickly became a popular feature. Portal Mode let players design their own unique experiences using maps and weapons from throughout the Battlefield series – it was a fun, creative space for a while. Unfortunately, EA and DICE made changes that ultimately damaged the mode. Now, it appears Battlefield 6 is heading down the same path, and it’s happening very soon after the game’s release. Unless things change, Battlefield 6’s Portal Mode could suffer the same fate.
Recent updates to Battlefield 6 are impacting Portal Mode due to concerns about players exploiting it to quickly earn experience points. Like Battlefield 2042 before it, the amount of XP earned in Portal Mode has been reduced to discourage players from using custom maps to easily complete challenges. These changes are part of a broader effort by EA and DICE to rebalance how players progress in the latest Battlefield game.
What is Going On With Portal Mode in Battlefield 6?

EA and DICE have lowered the amount of experience points (XP) and rewards players earn in Battlefield 6’s Portal Mode. They’ve capped the bonus for finishing matches at 150% and significantly reduced or removed other rewards. While this aims to stop players from unfairly ‘farming’ XP by repeatedly completing simple tasks, it’s also discouraging regular players from enjoying Portal Mode. Essentially, everyone is being penalized for the actions of a few.
A small group of players are creating custom games that take advantage of how the game tracks progress. While Portal Mode was designed for fun, creative game types like helicopters versus snipers, some players are using it to easily complete challenges and gain experience points quickly. These servers often host low-effort matches or allow players to remain inactive while still progressing, which isn’t the intended use of the feature.
We’re seeing a repeat of the issues that plagued Battlefield 2042. When that game launched, its Portal mode was quickly adjusted to give less experience because players discovered ways to unfairly gain advantages. DICE initially disabled experience gains completely, then limited them severely. Even after full experience progression was restored a year later, the mode had lost most of its players. Now, Battlefield 6 appears to be following the same path, with players leaving the game mode due to these recent changes.
Will Portal Mode Get Fixed in Battlefield 6?
There’s a small chance things will improve, but it’s not very strong. The changes that were first made to the main multiplayer modes now also apply to Portal Mode. The developers haven’t said if these changes are just for now or if they’re permanent. Because the game just came out, they’re probably watching how things go and will make more adjustments later. Unfortunately, this leaves players feeling frustrated and unsure about what to expect.
Based on how long it took to fix issues with Battlefield 2042, it might take months, or even a year, before the progression system in Portal Mode is working correctly. However, waiting that long could be a mistake. Portal is most popular when players are actively experimenting and creating content. If Battlefield Studios doesn’t fix the progression issues quickly, players may lose interest and stop playing, which would be unfortunate given how many people are currently enjoying the mode.
Honestly, the biggest problem with this game mode is how much it was hyped up for Battlefield 6. We all jumped in, spent money, and now it feels like they’re just ripping it away. There has to be a better way to handle this. What Battlefield Studios needs to do is figure out how to punish the servers people are abusing, without affecting all the legitimate ones. If they had better moderation, they could stop punishing players who just want to have fun and earn XP like they’re supposed to. Right now, there’s really no reason to stick with this mode instead of just playing the regular multiplayer.
