
Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Kirby Air Riders, saved the biggest news for last: the game will include a Story Mode. He also showed off the opening scene, which reveals how the Air Ride Machines came to be.
The Machines themselves are immobile; they only come to life when someone possesses them. Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Waddle Dee, Knuckle Joe, and others are all capable of doing this. While this affects Planet Popstar, the Machines are strangely attracted to a unique entity called Zorah – an unusual form of life that isn’t organic.
We don’t know anything about this mysterious force, but its desires are what started everything happening. Interestingly, the Fountain of Dreams and Nova – a powerful, mechanical comet from the game Kirby Super Star – seem to be connected. Nova even appears to wake up, as if reacting to Zorah’s wish.
It’s still uncertain how this new mode will play out, but Sakurai highlighted that every character—including Chef Kawasaki—will take center stage. Kirby Air Riders releases on November 20th for Nintendo Switch 2. You can find more information and learn about the return of Top Ride Mode here.
