The Sims Mobile Shutdown Could Be Good News for Project Rene Release Date

The Sims has been available on phones and tablets for years. It started with The Sims FreePlay in 2011, and then The Sims Mobile was added in 2018. For the last seven years, players have enjoyed both games, which each offer a unique way to experience the life simulation. However, EA recently announced that The Sims Mobile will be discontinued in early 2026. While it’s disappointing for fans of the game, I actually think this is a positive development.

As a big fan of The Sims, I’ve noticed EA’s been running servers for a few mobile games for a while now. They recently brought the classic MySims and MySims Kingdom to Apple Arcade, so it didn’t totally shock me when they announced one of the games was getting shut down. FreePlay always felt like a pretty direct copy of the console Sims, but The Sims Mobile really focused on the social side of things. That got me thinking – I have a feeling EA is shutting down The Sims Mobile to clear the way for Project Rene. It just makes sense that they’d want a fresh start with their new game!

The Sims Mobile Had a Multiplayer Focus, And So Will Project Rene

The Sims Mobile was unique because of its focus on social interaction. While details about the upcoming Project Rene are still limited, it’s becoming clear that the new game will heavily emphasize multiplayer features. We’ve seen Sims with usernames in early development footage, and EA has stated that multiplayer is a key area for growth for the Sims franchise. Given this, it seems odd that they are ending support for The Sims Mobile, which already had multiplayer capabilities.

Even though the game servers won’t be turned off until January, The Sims Mobile is no longer available to download. Current players can still enjoy the game, but new players won’t be able to join. EA hasn’t explained exactly why they’re shutting it down, but a decrease in players is probably a contributing factor. While The Sims Mobile was initially popular, it never reached the same level of success as the main Sims games like The Sims 4. However, EA seems committed to creating more multiplayer experiences within The Sims franchise.

Project Rene is the next evolution of The Sims, but it’s not simply a fifth installment. It’s a completely fresh experience designed with a strong emphasis on social interaction, and it will be available on both mobile devices and computers. It seems EA is aiming to capture the audience that enjoyed The Sims Mobile and offer them a significantly enhanced follow-up. The big question now is: when can we expect to play it?

What We Know About Project Rene, And When It Might Come Out

I’ve been a fan of The Sims since I was a kid, playing both the original and The Sims 2, so I’ve followed the series closely as an adult. I’ve been watching the development of Project Rene with a lot of curiosity, but also some confusion. For a long time, people thought it would be The Sims 5. However, EA has now said that Project Rene won’t replace The Sims 4; it will exist as a separate game. This suggests it will be similar to The Sims Mobile – a spin-off title with a unique way to play.

Project Rene, a new game from the creators of The Sims, was first revealed in 2022, but we haven’t heard much about it since. EA has allowed a small number of players to try out early versions, and a few details have been officially shared, including the fact that it will be free to play and exist alongside The Sims 4. We’ve seen glimpses of the building tools, but most of the information available comes from unofficial leaks. The development team at Maxis is being very secretive about the project.

There’s no confirmed release date for Project Rene, and it likely won’t be available for several years. However, the recent shutdown of The Sims Mobile suggests EA is preparing to launch a new mobile version of The Sims. With The Sims Mobile servers ending in early 2026, I expect we’ll soon hear more about Project Rene. It’s unclear if that means a 2026 release, or if it will come later in 2027 or beyond, but ending The Sims Mobile after running two mobile games for years definitely feels like a deliberate move to make way for something new.

The game might have simply stopped being profitable enough to cover the costs of maintaining the servers. With the recent launch of several MySims mobile games – bringing the total of Sims titles on mobile to four – EA could be streamlining its offerings. The company has experienced significant restructuring this year and is likely looking for ways to cut costs. However, my initial thought upon hearing about the shutdown was that it signaled the arrival of Project Rene. Now, we’ll have to wait and see if that’s correct.
