Halo Is Officially Coming to PlayStation After 25 Years

For years, Halo has been a series only available on Xbox, but that’s changing. Next year, the iconic franchise will officially be released on PlayStation. This continues a recent trend of Xbox games finding success on Sony’s PlayStation 5, with titles like Sea of Thieves, Age of Empires, Forza Horizon, and Gears of War already proving popular with PlayStation players.

Halo Studios revealed that a complete remake of the original Halo game, released in 2001 as Halo: Combat Evolved, is coming in 2026. Titled Halo: Campaign Evolved, the game will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. For a long time, fans have speculated about a total rebuild of the first Halo, and it was officially confirmed at the 2025 Halo World Championship. This announcement also signals the end of support for Halo Infinite in the Halo Championship Series.

Halo: Combat Evolved is now available on PlayStation with updated graphics and cutscenes. The game also includes new missions that explore the backstories of Master Chief and the popular character Sgt. Johnson. Players will notice improvements to weapons and vehicles, including changes to the assault rifle and the Warthog. Halo Studios believes these additions and enhancements will make the game incredibly replayable.

Halo Used to Be One of the Biggest FPS Games in the World

It’s hard to believe it’s been 24 years since the first Halo game launched with the original Xbox. Those who were early adopters of the Xbox quickly realized how groundbreaking it was. Halo helped establish the Xbox as a major player in the gaming world and played a huge role in making competitive first-person shooter games popular with a wide audience. Before Xbox Live arrived in 2002, playing online meant setting up the Xbox to use services like GameSpy Arcade, but many players did just that, eventually leading to larger esports tournaments globally.

The Halo series really took off with Halo 2 in 2004 and then Halo 3 in 2007, which at one point had over a million players online at the same time. Halo was the defining game of the 2000s and has been central to the Xbox brand for many years. However, recent games like Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite weren’t as well-received. This led to a major restructuring of the development team, with 343 Industries becoming Halo Studios and a new leadership team taking over. Future Halo games will also be built using Unreal Engine 5.

Halo’s Future Is Multiple Games & Platforms

Last year, Halo Studios made a big change: they stopped primarily using their own game engine, Slipspace, and switched to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. This allowed them to develop games faster and work on several new Halo projects at the same time. We already know about Halo: Campaign Evolved, and a new multiplayer Halo game is expected in 2026, though that date isn’t official. There’s speculation about other types of Halo games, like a strategy game similar to Halo Wars or even a battle royale mode, potentially being developed as well. It looks like Halo games won’t be exclusive to Xbox in the future.

Bringing the popular game Halo to PlayStation marks a significant shift away from Xbox being the only place to play it, but it’s actually a positive move. A larger player base will help keep the game thriving, which is crucial right now. While Halo Infinite has seen occasional boosts from updates and esports, its overall player numbers have been decreasing. With each new Xbox generation selling fewer consoles than the last, Halo needs to be on PlayStation to stay competitive and reach a wider audience. It simply means we won’t see the “Only on Xbox” branding on Halo game boxes anymore.
