DC Has Finally Crowned Its True Deadpool Replacement & It’s A Huge Surprise

For years, DC Comics has often been seen as second to Marvel, especially after the huge success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the X-Men films. Characters like Deadpool became incredibly popular, building a large fanbase even before the movies came out, thanks to his unique humor and action. While DC had some hits with characters like Harley Quinn, they never had anyone quite like Deadpool – a character who really stood out. But now, DC might have finally found their answer to the ‘Merc with a Mouth’ in Superboy-Prime.

Superboy-Prime first appeared in DC Comics Presents #87 during the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline. He was created as a tribute to earlier Superboy stories, which would no longer be considered official canon after Crisis ended. He later returned as a villain in Infinite Crisis, becoming increasingly aggressive and unstable, even to the point of understanding he was a comic book character. Though he seemingly died in Dark Knights: Death Metal, Superboy-Prime recently reappeared in Superman as part of the “Darkseid Legion” arc, and appears to be heading toward a similar role to Deadpool within the DC Universe.

Superboy-Prime Does Everything Deadpool Does…

As a longtime comics fan, I’ve always found Superboy-Prime’s story fascinating. It really kicked off with Infinite Crisis, and the ‘Prime’ part of his name is key – it meant he came from Earth-Prime, which was essentially our world. Back in the Bronze Age, DC writers used to playfully insert themselves into the DC Multiverse, and that eventually led to him. He was basically the Kal-El of his Earth, and the only one with powers. What’s really tragic is how he went from a hopeful young hero to someone completely unhinged. He spent years watching the DC Universe get darker and more violent after the original Crisis, all while stuck in a paradise dimension with other survivors. When he finally came back in Infinite Crisis, it was brutal – he wasn’t the hero anyone remembered, and it was clear he’d become something truly different.

Following his involvement with the Sinestro Corps, he was unexpectedly transported across the multiverse and transformed into Superman-Prime. This journey eventually brought him to a new version of Earth-Prime, where he discovered his friends and family had been following his adventures in comic books – and had witnessed his descent into villainy. Enraged, he attacked the offices of DC Comics before the writers gave him a peaceful resolution, ultimately leading to his death in Dark Knights: Death Metal. His surprising return in Superman #28 shocked fans and marked a significant shift in his character, making him behave much like Deadpool.

Deadpool became incredibly popular thanks to his unique humor – he frequently acknowledged he was a comic book character and directly addressed the audience – and his over-the-top violence. He’s become one of Marvel’s most beloved anti-heroes, and that success has continued for years. While DC Comics has its own share of anti-heroes, none have quite captured the same energy as Deadpool. However, DC appears to be developing Superboy-Prime to fill that role within the DC Universe.

Superboy-Prime has evolved into a complex anti-hero. He’s incredibly powerful and doesn’t hesitate to use force, even mocking his opponents while doing so. Uniquely, he’s aware he’s a comic book character and has even met the people who create his stories. He’s become much more humorous, moving away from being a typical brooding villain after finding happiness with his loved ones. In many ways, his development mirrors Deadpool’s – he breaks the fourth wall and uses similar comedic tactics – but arguably, Superboy-Prime pulls it off even better.

… But Better

Superboy-Prime is a fascinating character with a complex story. Originally introduced to clarify Superboy’s past during the Crisis event, he’s evolved into a symbol of the DC Universe’s shift towards darker themes. Readers have witnessed his dramatic journey, from achieving a hopeful resolution to facing consequences for his villainous actions and ultimately, his death. Now, he’s back and has become a standout comedic anti-hero in the world of comics.

Deadpool used to be a fan favorite, but recently he’s become predictable and relies too much on simple gags. In contrast, Superboy-Prime has evolved into a complex and compelling anti-hero with a lot of unexplored depth. He’s a different type of character than Deadpool, and that difference gives him more potential for interesting stories. While Deadpool feels stagnant, Superboy-Prime is still growing and developing, making him a much more exciting character to follow right now.
