Hey, so there’s a new free game on Steam, and if you’re a Bethesda fan, you might want to check it out. It’s a first-person shooter, which is cool, but it’s a bit of a mystery if it’ll actually work on the Steam Deck right now – Steam just says compatibility is ‘Unknown’. The best part? It’s free, so Steam Deck owners can just download it and see for themselves if it runs!
I just checked out this new free PC game, Darkenstein 3D, and it’s seriously cool! It’s made by Rowye and published by MicroPose Software. If you’re like me and grew up playing Wolfenstein and DOOM, you’ll instantly get the vibe – it’s a retro shooter totally inspired by those classics. It really feels like a love letter to the older Wolfenstein and DOOM games, and people seem to agree – it’s got an 88% approval rating on Steam with over 230 reviews already!
About the Game
Darkenstein 3D is an old-school, fast-paced first-person shooter – often called a ‘boomer shooter.’ Like classic games of this type, it’s notoriously difficult. It’s best played with a mouse and keyboard rather than a controller.
This fast-paced, retro-style shooter throws you back to the glory days of 1990s FPS games. You play as a tough American drifter known as the Hobo Guy, armed with a shotgun and on a mission of personal revenge through 1940s Germany. Your beloved dog, Gunther, has been captured by the Nazis, and you’ll stop at nothing to save him. Along the way, you’ll stumble upon alien mysteries, unlock bizarre abilities, and confront terrifying hidden dangers.
One player commented that it’s amazing this game is free, and went on to say it’s a really fun and clever parody of the Wolfenstein games. They highly recommend it to fans, giving it a perfect 10/10 score.
One Steam player compared this game to classic shooters like Wolfenstein, DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem, and Serious Sam, saying it’s a great fit for fans of those titles.
If you’re thinking of trying out this new free game on Steam, the story mode will likely take a few hours to complete. And it’s not the only free PC game available right now – Bethesda is also giving away two Fallout games to their fans.
We’d love to hear your thoughts! Please leave a comment or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum.
