Ghost of Yotei Fans Slam Unexpected Downgrade From Ghost of Tsushima

So, Sucker Punch dropped Ghost of Yotei this month on PS5 and PS5 Pro – it’s the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima from 2020. Everyone’s saying it’s a bit better than the first one – it’s sitting at an 86 on Metacritic, while the original had an 83. But honestly, while the sequel does a lot of things just as well, or even better, there are a few things that feel like they took a step back. And a lot of players have definitely noticed those changes.

A popular post on the Ghost of Tsushima subreddit discusses a disappointing aspect of the Ghost of Yotei expansion. The post focuses on the companions, known as the “Wolf Pack,” and argues that a promising idea wasn’t fully realized. The main problem is that these characters don’t feel essential to the story, and players don’t develop meaningful connections with them.

“Absolutely Nothing”

Honestly, one of the biggest things that bothered me about the game was the side characters. You don’t really connect with any of them. They’re just there to sell you stuff or give you a quick tutorial, and that’s it. There’s zero depth to their stories. And it’s not just them – even the ‘Wolf Pack’ you’re supposed to build up is just a menu screen. Seriously, a menu! It feels so disconnected and a little disappointing.

The article goes on to explain that before the game’s release, Sucker Punch Productions and PlayStation heavily featured the Wolf Pack, leading many to believe it would be a significant gameplay element. Some, including the author, expected it to be similar to a simplified version of Mass Effect, but ultimately it turned out to be almost nonexistent.

This criticism alone isn’t particularly significant, but the fact that the original post gained so much attention indicates many people feel the same way. The comments section confirms this, with numerous users echoing the same concerns. Several commenters even believe this is a step down from Ghost of Tsushima.

One popular comment highlighted a key difference between Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei. In Ghost of Tsushima, companion characters’ stories developed alongside the player’s, and they stayed actively involved in the game. However, in Ghost of Yotei, companions tend to disappear after a few missions, becoming little more than shopkeepers.

Someone else agreed, pointing out that Mad Goro is a much more memorable character despite appearing only briefly, compared to any of the characters in the wolf pack.

Sucker Punch Productions can’t address this problem with updates to the current game. They might consider it when developing a future title, but there’s no guarantee that will be Ghost of Tsushima 3. The studio is also exploring the possibility of bringing back one of their older franchises that hasn’t been seen since the PlayStation 3 era.
