The 1992 thriller, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, captivated audiences with its unsettling story of a nanny seeking revenge for the loss of her child. That same core idea drives a new version of the film, now streaming on Hulu. Though it shares a title with the original, the cast and director emphasize how much this remake differs, to the point where they sometimes didn’t even realize it was a remake while filming.
Director Michelle Garza Cervera recently spoke with ComicBook about her vision for the remake. While she initially revisited the original film for inspiration, she quickly decided to treat this as a new project, not just a copy. “I watched the original when I first got the job to see what elements I could use,” Cervera explained, “but then I asked everyone on the team to avoid rewatching it so we wouldn’t fall into the trap of simply trying to recreate the original.”
Cervera explained that it’s difficult to be truly creative when you’re constantly comparing your work to something else. He believes this isn’t a good approach and doesn’t show enough respect for the team or the creative process itself. Ultimately, he feels it’s important to focus on your own ideas, characters, and story. He admitted that, at times, the team lost sight of the fact that they were making a remake.
Maika Monroe agrees the new film is very different from the original. She hadn’t rewatched the first movie before starting work on this one, and believes they’re almost entirely separate projects. While both films share the basic premise of a nanny causing trouble at a house, Monroe feels that’s where the similarities end.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead admits she hadn’t seen the original movie before working on the remake. However, after reading the new script, she started comparing the two and plans to watch the original soon. She knew of its reputation and the feeling it created for audiences, as it’s considered a classic. Once she loved the script for the remake, she researched the original and realized the new film offered a very different take.
Winstead explained that while the core storyline exists, the characters seem to inhabit very different realities. She decided to set the idea aside for now, focus on making the film, and expressed interest in revisiting it later.
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is now available on Hulu.
