With the final season on its way, now is a perfect time to revisit the show from the beginning. But maybe finish another show first – one that’s celebrating its second anniversary this year!

The Duffer brothers often get the spotlight at Netflix events, but Mike Flanagan consistently delivers exciting projects that boost the company’s appeal. He’s known for films like Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck, but his true strength lies in television, with acclaimed series such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. Most notably, he recently reimagined a story from almost two centuries ago into a truly unforgettable horror series.

Edgar Allen Poe and Mike Flanagan Are a Match Made in Heaven

Filmmakers often find inspiration in the work of others, and Mike Flanagan is open about his sources. His series The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor were inspired by 19th-century stories, and his latest, The Fall of the House of Usher, continues this trend. It’s based on the 1839 Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name, incorporating elements from other Poe works. Poe is widely known, largely thanks to the enduring popularity of his poem “The Raven,” which even inspired the name of the Baltimore Ravens football team. While “The Fall of the House of Usher” isn’t as famous as “The Raven,” Flanagan expertly uses its core themes of fear and guilt throughout the series.

While strong themes can only carry a show so far, The Fall of the House of Usher really shines because it dives right into its intriguing story. The series centers on Roderick Usher, who, after tragically losing his children, summons an old rival to reveal his family’s history. The show skillfully jumps between different time periods, illustrating how even the most powerful dynasty can crumble. Despite the complex storyline, the incredible cast makes everything easy to follow, with each actor delivering a standout performance. It’s disappointing that this might be the last show of its kind on Netflix, as the creator, Mike Flanagan, is moving to a different streaming service.

The Fall of the House of Usher Is the Last Mike Flanagan Netflix Series

Netflix and Mike Flanagan, the creator behind popular horror series, ended their working relationship due to a disagreement over physical media. Flanagan wanted to release DVDs and Blu-rays of his shows, allowing fans to own them, but Netflix preferred to keep viewers subscribing to their streaming service.
