Netflix offers a lot of content based on Stephen King’s work, but they’re about to lose a sci-fi film just as fans are really enjoying a surge of King adaptations. It’s been a fantastic year for Stephen King fans, and it’s continuing to get better. This year alone, three of his stories – The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, and The Long Walk – were made into movies. Plus, a TV series based on his novel The Institute premiered on MGM+. King also released a new Holly Gibney mystery, Never Flinch. Unfortunately, Netflix is making a disappointing move next month.
Stephen King fans have two new projects to look forward to next month: a TV series called It: Welcome to Derry and a remake of The Running Man directed by Edgar Wright. Unfortunately, Just Watch reports that the original Running Man movie will be removed from Netflix on November 1st – only 11 days before the new remake arrives in cinemas.
Netflix Losing The Running Man – Where Can Fans See It Now?

Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, penned The Running Man in 1982. The novel remarkably predicted the popularity of reality TV and how it could capture the public’s attention. But with a dark twist: the show featured a man desperately running to escape those hunting him. Published over a decade before shows like Survivor, both the book and the initial film adaptation were surprisingly ahead of their time.
The 1987 film The Running Man, currently still available on Netflix for a limited time, features Arnold Schwarzenegger as a prisoner trying to win his freedom by competing in a brutal reality TV show. While not considered one of Stephen King’s strongest adaptations, it gained a dedicated following over the years. A recent remake stars Glen Powell as a man who enters the competition to support his family. Both films explore a similar dark future where a controlling government prioritizes entertainment above human life.
Losing The Running Man from Netflix right now couldn’t have come at a worse time. With Edgar Wright’s highly anticipated remake on the way, many people will likely want to revisit the original, either to compare versions or simply to remember the Arnold Schwarzenegger film. Unfortunately, it’s leaving Netflix just 11 days before the new movie comes out. While this is disappointing for Netflix subscribers, fans still have options to stream the original elsewhere.
You can still stream The Running Man with a Paramount+ subscription, which costs as little as $7.99 per month, or on BBC America if you subscribe to that service. If you have AMC+, you’ll need to watch soon, as it leaves that platform on November 1st – the same day it’s removed from Netflix. Otherwise, the Stephen King sci-fi film is available to rent from Apple TV, Plex, Fandango At Home, and Amazon.
Edgar Wright, the director behind films like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, is releasing a new movie, The Running Man, on November 11th. Glen Powell plays Ben Richards, who enters a deadly competition called the Running Man in a desperate attempt to earn money for his family’s medical bills. Josh Brolin plays the contest’s manipulative producer, and Colman Domingo steps into the role of the game show host, originally played by Richard Dawson. The cast also includes Lee Pace, Michael Cera, and William H. Macy.
