3 Cult RPGs That Deserve the Same Remake Treatment as Final Fantasy VII

When Square Enix announced they were remaking Final Fantasy VII, fans were thrilled. It’s a classic game, and the idea of seeing it with updated, beautiful graphics was incredibly exciting for longtime players. The remake turned out to be a three-part project that really redefined what a remake could be. While it’s unlikely another developer would take the same approach with a beloved RPG, it’s fun to imagine. The games below were all highly praised when they first came out, and they could really shine with the same kind of modern makeover Square Enix gave to FF7.

Here are three classic RPGs that deserve the full remake treatment.

3) Parasite Eve

Tetsuya Nomura, the director of Final Fantasy VII Remake, has worked on multiple games mentioned here, but his impact is most noticeable in Parasite Eve. He served as the character designer for Parasite Eve, just as he did for the original Final Fantasy VII.

There’s more than one reason a Parasite Eve revival would be fantastic. Originally, this horror RPG was Square’s attempt to compete with Capcom’s Resident Evil. It was successful enough to spawn two sequels, a movie, and even two manga adaptations, giving a remake a wealth of source material. A development team could easily build on the original story, perhaps even reimagining it in a way similar to the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Considering this, a complete remake of Parasite Eve doesn’t seem unlikely. Yoshinori Kitase, a producer at Square Enix, even mentioned in 2020 that the characters are too valuable to leave unused, hinting at potential future development.

2) Chrono Trigger

Besides Final Fantasy VII, Nomura also contributed to Chrono Trigger. However, he worked on Chrono Trigger earlier in his career, before achieving widespread recognition with FF7. He was part of the team responsible for the game’s field graphics. Interestingly, Kitase, who would later become known for his work on Final Fantasy, directed Chrono Trigger.

A remake of Chrono Trigger is inevitable, even if the original creators aren’t involved. The game is a classic, often considered one of the greatest RPGs ever made for the Super Nintendo. Given how well the Final Fantasy VII remake performed, a full remake of Chrono Trigger seems incredibly likely and potentially very profitable. It feels like it’s only a matter of when, not if, it will happen.

Adding time travel as a gameplay element would be perfect for a larger, more detailed remake. It would allow developers to add fresh content for long-time fans without changing what makes the original game special.

1) Earthbound

EarthBound is a unique case when considering games with expanded stories. Unlike some classics, it’s a very focused game that tells its story concisely. This doesn’t make it superior to Chrono Trigger, but it would be harder to significantly expand its narrative in the same way as Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Fans outside of Japan have long asked Nintendo to release Mother 3, the sequel to the beloved RPG. Despite a Virtual Console release on the Wii U in 2015, it’s never been officially available in Western markets. A complete remake of Earthbound would be a perfect opportunity for Nintendo to finally include Mother 3 in its offerings.

This would allow the developers to gauge fan reactions and creatively blend elements from both games, offering satisfying references for longtime fans who’ve been waiting since 2006. It would also be a wonderful tribute to Shigesato Itoi, the director of Earthbound, who hasn’t released a new game since working on the story for Mother 3. While Nintendo already has strong fan support, imagine how thrilled people would be if this finally came to fruition!
