Halo: Combat Evolved is coming to PS5 and will let two players game together locally via split-screen, or up to four players team up online for the campaign. However, it won’t include any competitive multiplayer modes.
Local area network (LAN) parties were hugely popular with the original Halo: Combat Evolved and really helped make the game a hit, so it’s surprising that this new version doesn’t include any player-versus-player (PvP) options.
I was reading Windows Central, and apparently, the folks at Halo Studios – the team making the game – decided they didn’t want to just remake the original. That’s what the executive producer, Damon Conn, told them – they weren’t aiming to replace it, just do something new.
He said:
We’re not aiming to remake a classic; we want to create something equally impressive that builds upon the original. We’re using modern techniques and a new approach to offer a fresh perspective while still respecting its history and impact.
Conn emphasized how crucial it is to successfully launch the game’s new four-player online mode, and they’ve put a significant amount of work into making it happen.
He added:
Halo has always focused on bringing people together through shared experiences and a strong community. We think this new release will continue that tradition and help us connect with fans in a meaningful way.
It’s a bit of a wishy-washy answer really, and it doesn’t really clarify Halo Studios’ position.
There’s talk that the game’s creator is developing a separate, online multiplayer game, potentially offering the same competitive gameplay in a new format.
The studio has confirmed that future Halo games will also be released on PS5, so fans can expect to play them on Sony’s console going forward.
