Be warned, this article reveals key plot points from season 1 of Alien: Earth. The fact that we haven’t heard anything about season 2, even a month after the finale, points to a larger issue with streaming television. Alien: Earth was a fantastic show that successfully revitalized the Alien franchise. It offered a compelling prequel story that connected to the existing Alien films and broadened the universe with interesting new alien creatures and organizations.
Despite its strengths, Alien: Earth also points to some major challenges facing streaming services. It was promoted as a Hulu original even as Hulu was being phased out and combined with Disney+. But the biggest issue Alien: Earth reveals is a problem almost every streaming service has encountered – and none have managed to solve.
Alien: Earth Still Hasn’t Been Renewed For Season 2

The first season of Alien: Earth concluded in mid-September. As of late October, there’s still no official word on whether the show will be renewed for a second season. Noah Hawley, the show’s creator and executive producer, has said he wants to continue the series and has ideas for connecting it to the original Alien film, but so far, those plans haven’t led to a renewal announcement.
Although it’s not an unusually long wait, the lack of official news about Alien: Earth season 2 is concerning. Disney hasn’t confirmed the season yet, which likely means production hasn’t started. Given the show’s large budget, extensive cast, and complex visual effects, a new season is probably a long way off.
Everyone knows streaming shows take more time to create new seasons compared to older TV shows. Traditionally, television production was less expensive than making movies. But now that high-quality shows are standard, they require larger budgets, longer filming schedules, and extensive post-production, including things like special effects. As a result, shows such as Alien: Earth can have gaps of up to three years between seasons.
Noah Hawley admits a new season of Alien: Earth might be a long way off. He explained to ScreenRant that Disney has the final say, and their process could delay any quick plans he has for the show’s return.
Regarding the show’s future, FX is carefully analyzing the viewership numbers to determine if there’s enough interest for another season. They’re looking at how the audience responded throughout the season, not just at the beginning. The final episode is next week, and I’ve been developing ideas for future storylines. I’m eager to keep the show moving forward quickly, but the decision ultimately rests with Disney. There’s still a lot of potential for great stories to tell.
Alien: Earth’s Uncertain Future Makes Season 1’s Cliffhanger Even Worse
Patrick Brown/FX
If there’s a significant delay before the next season of Alien: Earth, the way season 1 ended feels even more frustrating. The finale left viewers on a cliffhanger with no real resolution. Now, Wendy and the Lost Boys are facing a battle against the forces of Weyland-Yutani who are headed to Neverland Island, and the fate of all the aliens there remains uncertain.
Unfortunately, because production on Alien: Earth is running behind, we won’t be getting any answers anytime soon. It will likely be at least a year, and possibly even longer, before we find out what happens with the Lost Boys or what they did with their captives. Fans are left in a frustrating position, with no clear timeline for when the story will continue and we’ll finally get some resolution.
Streaming Has Spoiled The Fun Of Cliffhangers
The ending of ‘Alien: Earth’ season one has brought attention to a growing issue with streaming shows: they rarely create truly exciting cliffhangers anymore. In the past, when TV shows had long breaks between seasons, cliffhangers were a great way to get people talking, guessing, and eager for the next season. They kept fans engaged during those months-long waits.
Cliffhangers used to work because viewers knew the answers would come within a few months. While the wait was frustrating, you’d still find out what happened before you lost interest. But now, with streaming shows, the gap between seasons is so long that cliffhangers just aren’t satisfying or effective anymore.
Consider the show Severance. It took almost three years for season 2 to be released, and the first season ended with a huge cliffhanger. By the time the new season arrived, I’d forgotten the details of the finale and had to rewatch the first season to catch up. Severance managed to overcome that long wait because it was so good, but not every show has that kind of staying power.
With shows like Alien: Earth, it’s hard to imagine viewers will still be invested in the characters and story after a long wait. Rewatching the season before the next one arrives defeats the purpose of a cliffhanger, which is meant to build excitement. Cliffhangers are increasingly feeling less like a way to keep audiences engaged and more like frustrating, unresolved endings.
Alien: Earth Deserves A Second Season
I know the long wait between seasons is going to be tough for Alien: Earth, but I really think it’s worth continuing. There are still so many unanswered questions – what will happen to the aliens and the Lost Boys, for example? Plus, another season would be a great chance to really connect the show to the original Alien movies and make it feel like a solid part of that universe. I’m hoping we get to see those storylines wrapped up!
| Alien Movies & TV Shows In Timeline Order | |
|---|---|
| Title | Year Set |
| Prometheus (2012) | 2093 |
| Alien: Covenant (2017) | 2104 |
| Alien: Earth (2025) | 2120 |
| Alien (1979) | 2122 |
| Alien: Romulus (2024) | 2142 |
| Aliens (1986) | 2179 |
| Alien 3 (1992) | 2180 |
| Alien Resurrection (1997) | 2379 |
Beyond just finishing the exciting first season, Alien: Earth deserves another season because it’s a genuinely well-made show. The actors are fantastic, particularly those playing the hybrid characters who convincingly portray childlike behavior. The show’s visuals and creature effects are also outstanding, delivering some of the best Xenomorph scenes we’ve seen in a long time. The story is captivating, and it would be a real loss to end such a promising series now.
The show Alien: Earth deserves to continue because it stands out within the Alien franchise. It successfully moved away from the standard Alien storyline of a Xenomorph causing chaos on a ship, and that kind of creative risk should be encouraged. Noah Hawley and his team are bravely expanding the Alien universe, and even if it takes time, Alien: Earth should be renewed for a second season.
