I’m so hyped for The Outer Worlds 2! From what I’ve seen, you’re not exactly the perfect savior Arcadia is hoping for, but you’re the best chance they’ve got. The game has a really interesting problem – this rift thing is threatening everyone – and I’ve been reading up on 15 tips to help make my playthrough as awesome as possible.
Change the perspective between 1st and 3rd person
In The Outer Worlds 2, you can choose to play in either first-person or third-person. This option is appearing in more and more RPGs, and while I usually prefer first-person, the third-person view in this game is excellent too – so play however you enjoy!
Use your Tactical Time Dilation (TTD) Gadget
Like the original The Outer Worlds and reminiscent of the V.A.T.S. system in Fallout: New Vegas, you can now slow down time during fights or while exploring. This lets you aim more accurately, dodge attacks, or quietly sneak past fast-moving obstacles. Instead of being a character ability, it’s now a handy gadget, but it works the same way and is a lifesaver when you need it.
Your TTD isn’t your only gadget, try them all out!
The Tactical Time Dilation gadget is one of several you’ll find while playing. You’ll also discover tools like a shield that deflects gas energy and a scanner that lets you see through walls. These gadgets aren’t just helpful in fights—they’re often needed to solve puzzles or unlock new areas to explore.
Some perks can have negative effects too
A key feature of role-playing in The Outer Worlds 2 is the new Flaws system. These are unique character traits that offer both benefits and drawbacks – for example, one might let you carry more ammo but briefly reduce your damage when you run empty. These flaws can significantly impact how you play, so it’s important to understand the downsides, as they’re permanent choices!
Objectives usually have multiple ways to complete them
Modern Western RPGs are known for letting players tackle challenges in various ways, depending on their character’s strengths and history, and The Outer Worlds 2 really expands on that idea. Most major quests offer multiple solutions – you can often talk your way through them or use force – and the more you investigate, the more options you’ll discover to move forward.
Side quests and optional objectives can often be instrumental to the main quest
When you’re working through the main story, remember to also check your side quests and optional objectives. It’s easy to get focused on the main mission and overlook these, but they often provide helpful resources or information that can make things easier later on.
Side quests can be hidden in terminals, collectible objects, or dead bodies
In The Outer Worlds 2, exploring every part of the planets in Arcadia is really worth it! You’ll be rewarded with new quests and content as you discover hidden details. While traveling, you’ll often find things like abandoned buildings, computers, and even bodies – and these usually lead to new information, hints about nearby adventures, or even entirely new side quests.
Tune into the wireless broadcasts for new side quests and lore
Arcadia has radio stations you can listen to from the pause menu, featuring music, ads, and in-game talk. They mostly provide background atmosphere, but occasionally you’ll get a message telling you to tune in for important broadcasts, like distress signals. These broadcasts trigger quests that are always available if you miss them initially, so it’s best to complete them as soon as you hear about them.
Your medical inhaler is not an infinite healing device

In The Outer Worlds 2, you heal using an inhaler powered by Zyranium. However, it’s not endlessly rechargeable. You can refill it at AutoDocs or by finding charging stations, but it won’t automatically recharge on its own. Each time you use the inhaler, Zyranium builds up in your system, and if you overdo it, the buildup will become fatal. So, you’ll need to use it strategically and not too often.
Melee weapons can be just as powerful as guns, if not more
Although guns are a big focus in The Outer Worlds 2, the game also features a wide variety of melee weapons, including swords, shock rods, and corrosive staffs. Many enemies use melee attacks and will try to close the distance quickly, making a good melee weapon useful, particularly when you need to reload or are low on ammo. Remember that gun and melee damage are controlled by separate skills, so it’s worth investing in both.
Perks and skill points work in tandem with each other, but are not the same thing
As you gain experience in The Outer Worlds 2, you’ll usually get two skill points to improve your abilities, like combat, talking, and hacking. Every other level, you’ll also unlock a perk, which gives you special benefits such as stat boosts or new features like extra space for weapons or stronger armor. While perks sometimes require certain skill levels to unlock, you’ll need to manage both your skill points and perks independently to fully develop your character.
Don’t forget about your companion skills
Your companions will stick with you throughout Arcadia, so it’s important to remember what they can do in a fight or while exploring. Each one has unique skills you can unlock and a special ability that either helps you or attacks enemies. They’ll automatically attack on their own, but don’t forget to use their special abilities – they can be really useful in tough battles!
Skill checks can create new solutions

In The Outer Worlds 2, you’ll often face challenges that require specific skill levels to overcome. For example, you might need to be good at Lockpicking to open a tough door, Science to run experiments, or Speech to convince someone. It’s helpful to focus on leveling up a few key skills, as this will unlock unique ways to solve problems and discover hidden areas during quests and while exploring the abandoned world of Arcadia.
Always look up, down, and around for vents and other hidden areas
Your character could also focus on stealth, and the world of Arcadia is full of vents, tunnels, and hidden paths. These aren’t just for avoiding fights – they can lead to secret locations, valuable items, or even new quests. If you’re ever stuck or looking for something extra, take a close look around – you might discover a hidden route!
Look for optional info to make your fights easier
During conversations, you’ll often see choices that require certain skills or perks to unlock. These options usually depend on information you’ve found by exploring computers throughout the game, and they often lead to the most rewarding results. Sometimes, the game asks for specific information along with a skill check, making it even more valuable to gather everything you can.
