As an analyst, I’m closely watching the upcoming launch of The Outer Worlds 2. This is poised to be one of the biggest RPG releases this fall, and potentially one of the biggest games of the year overall. Obsidian Entertainment is really building on the success of their 2019 sci-fi adventure with this follow-up. It’s hitting Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 on October 29th, and players who purchased the Premium Edition are already getting a head start with Early Access, while it’s also available on Xbox Game Pass.
This game is the third 2025 release announced by the studio, following Avowed and Grounded 2. Early reviews have been very positive, with many outlets and Metacritic giving it high scores before it even comes out. Our own Samuel Tolbert at Windows Central awarded it 4.5 out of 5 stars, praising its engaging exploration and combat, and noting that the game offers a challenging role-playing experience that adapts to the player’s abilities.
Reviewers have consistently lauded The Outer Worlds 2 for its complex and satisfying RPG mechanics. The game offers a huge number of ways to approach combat and quests, a world that meaningfully responds to your choices, and a story full of branching paths and consequences.
This game feels like the long-awaited sequel to Fallout: New Vegas, created by the same team fifteen years later. It’s easy to see why RPG fans and the gaming community are so excited about it.
Many PC gamers have been curious about whether their computers can handle The Outer Worlds 2. Luckily, the game’s system requirements – both the minimum and recommended specs – are now listed on its Steam page. I’ve put them together in the table below for easy reference.

| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| OS: | Windows 10/11 with updates | Windows 10/11 with updates |
| Processor: | AMD Ryzen 5 2600 / Intel i5-8400 | AMD Ryzen 5 5600X / Intel Core i7-10700K |
| Memory: | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics: | AMD RX 5700 / Nvidia GTX 1070 / Intel Arc A580 | AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT / Nvidia RTX 3080 |
| DirectX: | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage: | 110 GB available space | 110 GB available space |
| Additional notes: | SSD required. Performance scales with higher-end systems. | SSD required. Performance scales with higher-end systems. |
The good news is The Outer Worlds 2 won’t require a powerful PC to run. The minimum specs include the Intel i5-8400 processor and NVIDIA GTX 1070 graphics card – both over a decade old at this point. If your gaming PC is reasonably current, you should be able to run the game, at least on Low settings at 1080p resolution.
To really enjoy The Outer Worlds 2 with better graphics and smooth performance, you’ll need a more powerful computer. We recommend something around the level of an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and an NVIDIA RTX 3080 – or similar, newer components. In fact, many current graphics cards and processors will be even better than that.
The good news is that you won’t need a powerful computer to run The Outer Worlds 2. The minimum system requirements are quite low, even asking for older hardware.
Generally, the things you need for a good experience aren’t terrible, but they definitely cost money. Even some of the older parts they recommend can still be surprisingly pricey.
One potential issue is storage: The Outer Worlds 2 needs to be installed on a solid-state drive (SSD) and takes up 110 GB of space. While many players already have SSDs, those still using traditional hard drives (HDDs) will need to upgrade. (You can find some recommended SSDs here.)
110 GB is a substantial amount of storage space and might mean you need to free up room by deleting some games. Unfortunately, large file sizes are becoming more and more typical, particularly for massive role-playing games like this.

It’s important to remember that the listed minimum and recommended system requirements don’t include technologies like NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, or AI-powered frame generation. This suggests the requirements were determined assuming these features wouldn’t be used.
The Outer Worlds 2 works with performance-boosting tools that can help your computer run the game smoothly, even if it doesn’t quite meet the recommended requirements. These tools are especially useful if you’re aiming for the highest possible framerates and don’t mind a slight reduction in graphics quality – something you likely won’t even notice thanks to modern upscaling technology.
Wondering if your computer can run the game, or just want to check its specs? Simply type “dxdiag” into the Windows search bar to open a window with detailed system information.
Wondering if your computer can run the game, or just want to see how it stacks up against the recommended specs? It’s easy to check! Just type “dxdiag” into the Windows search bar and open the window that appears. The “System” tab will show you your processor (CPU), memory (RAM), and DirectX version. For your graphics card (GPU) information, go to the “Display” tab. You can also use File Explorer to check how much free space you have on your SSD.
The Outer Worlds 2 will be released on October 29th for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and is also available on Game Pass. Players who buy the Premium Edition can start playing right now. Currently, the Standard Edition for Xbox (and PC with Xbox Play Anywhere) is on sale at Loaded for $55.79, down from its usual price of $69.99.
