What’s the view from your sofa?
I’m on the fence about the fireplace, but I’m leaning towards liking it. It’s quite detailed, with a wooden frame and a mirror above it. It looks like it’s original to the house and hasn’t been updated since the 1920s. The TV, on the other hand, is small and just a temporary fix – I didn’t attach the stand properly, so it keeps falling backwards.
Sounds like you need a TV upgrade!
Honestly, my wife Emer and I made a sentimental decision when we moved. We left our old TV – it was perfectly fitted to the wall in that house, and we just thought it would be a nice thing to do for the next owners. Now, though? We really regret it! It was a TV we truly loved, and we’re kicking ourselves for not taking it with us.
You began your career as a model — when did you realise you’re handsome?
I think I was an adorable child, but between the ages of 10 and 16 – a really awkward time – I definitely wasn’t considered good-looking. I sometimes wonder if that actually helped me develop character. Then, around 17 or 18, my features finally came together, and things improved. It was strange to go from being unattractive to, a few years later, being approached about modeling. I did some work during and after university, and honestly, I didn’t enjoy it. The industry seemed a bit seedy, and while the models themselves were okay, I didn’t like many of the people involved.
What’s the best TV programme you’ve watched recently?
Jon Hamm stars in “Your Friends & Neighbors” on Apple TV, and it’s a really good show – the whole cast is strong. It offers some thoughtful insights into family dynamics. As a new dad myself, anything exploring family and fatherhood tends to get me emotional.
How do you juggle family life and, among other things, 5 Live Breakfast?
It’s challenging balancing work with everything else, especially because Emer and I both have jobs, and I want to make sure she has enough time for hers. Coordinating everything feels like a complicated puzzle. Luckily, despite the long hours, doing a morning show means I’m home during the day and get to spend time with my son, which is great. You just have to find a way to make it all work.
How ready were you for fatherhood?
We really wanted this, and I spent a lot of time thinking about what it would be like. But nothing could have prepared me for the reality of it. The emotions are so much deeper than I ever imagined. It’s amazing how much more intensely I feel everything now, because I’m constantly thinking about how things will affect his future.
How has it affected your work?
I feel things deeply, so hearing difficult stories on the radio really impacts me. When Russia invaded Ukraine during my first year hosting 5 Live Breakfast, it was particularly challenging. Speaking with people from Ukraine was unlike anything I’d experienced before – it was incredibly overwhelming, and I honestly struggled to cope. I’ve definitely cried on air a few times. I think listeners understand that’s a natural human reaction, but of course, you don’t want to be visibly upset all the time.
How’s your relationship with your dad?
My dad is just the best. Things have definitely changed since he was my age, and our lives are pretty different now, but I still find myself turning to him when I need advice. Even if I know he won’t have all the answers – especially when it comes to, say, the latest streaming service or obscure film director – I always value his perspective. He’s just someone I feel completely safe talking to.
What has surprised you most about becoming a parent?
Parenting definitely has its tough, dull, and frustrating moments. But it’s important not to let those feelings overshadow the amazing and unique joy it brings. It’s made me truly appreciate how much love my own parents have for me.
