7 Great Recent Anime Nobody Talks About

Anime is becoming increasingly popular, with new shows and movies released all the time. While everyone talks about the biggest hits, many great anime series don’t get the recognition they deserve. Lots of fantastic shows remain hidden in the shadow of popular titles like Solo Leveling, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen.

I’m always discovering incredible anime that just don’t get the attention they deserve! They have everything – amazing stories, beautiful animation, soundtracks you can’t stop listening to, the works! It’s especially frustrating now, because the anime world is huge and there are so many popular shows, yet these gems still fly under the radar. Whether they’re completely original or adapted from lesser-known manga, the anime I love most really focus on relatable characters and tackle themes you just don’t see in mainstream anime.

7) Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective

People are often comparing this new medical drama to The Apothecary Diaries, but they’re actually quite different. While Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective kept viewers hooked throughout its first season, the show hasn’t been picked up for another. It follows Dr. Takao Ameku, a smart but unusual doctor who leads the investigative pathology department at Tenikai General Hospital.

Ameku’s department handles the most challenging medical mysteries, cases that other doctors can’t figure out. She frequently takes on these difficult investigations, often involving unusual deaths and even murders, and usually brings her assistant, Yu Takanashi, along to help solve them.

6) Mr. Villain’s Day Off

I recently stumbled upon a really sweet anime called Mr. Villain’s Day Off, and it’s quickly become a favorite. It’s one of those hidden gems that deserves more attention – I’m really hoping it gets a second season! Unlike a lot of anime that are full of intense action, this one is just…charming. It’s surprisingly refreshing because I went into it with no expectations, and it was perfect for just relaxing and enjoying something lighthearted.

The story follows Warumono-san, one of the galaxy’s most fearsome villains, whose job is to destroy humankind. But even world-ending threats need downtime! Before starting his mission, this alien enjoys everyday activities like visiting pandas at the zoo and eating ice cream.

5) 100 Meters

This animated film is adapted from a lesser-known manga by Uoto, who also created the popular historical drama Orb: On the Movements of the Earth released in 2024. While it came out in Japan last month and has been shown internationally, 100 Meters didn’t become a blockbuster. Despite this, critics praised the film for its engaging plot, emotional impact, and visually exciting presentation.

I’m completely hooked on this story! It follows Togashi, a naturally gifted runner who’s always won races – it just comes so easily to him. But everything changes when he meets Komiya, a new kid at school who loves running just as much, even if he doesn’t have the same natural talent. That meeting really sparks something in Togashi; he decides he has to win, no matter what. Years later, it’s amazing to see them reconnect, but this time as rivals, pushing each other on the track! It’s a fantastic setup.

4) Yano-kun’s Ordinary Days

Released this month, ‘Yano-kun’s Ordinary Days’ is a charming romantic comedy that unfortunately hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. Despite the popularity of other shows, this series is a genuinely funny and sweet story – the ideal feel-good show. It focuses on Kiyoko Yoshida, a class president who finds herself concerned for Tsuyoshi Yano after noticing his frequent injuries.

She’s a very responsible person and always wants to help and protect him, often worrying about the trouble he might find. She even started secretly following him to see what he was up to! But she quickly discovered he wasn’t facing any serious dangers – he was just clumsy. Ever since then, she’s always prepared with a first aid kit and tries her best to prevent his accidents.

3) Blue Orchestra

A fantastic music anime recently returned for a second season as part of the Fall 2025 schedule. The show tells the story of Hajime Aono, a former violin star who lost his passion for music by the time he reached middle school and is now searching for his place in life.

Ryuuji Aono grew up learning the violin from his father, a professional musician. His life was turned upside down when his father became involved in a public scandal involving an affair and a secret daughter. But things begin to change when he meets Ritsuko Akine, and he starts a journey to heal from the past and rediscover his love for music.

2) The Colors Within

This stunning 2024 film, directed by Naoko Yamada (known for the highly praised A Silent Voice), is visually striking with its gentle, pastel color palette. The story centers on Tosuko, a high school student who can see people’s emotions as colors. Intrigued by the bright colors surrounding her classmate Kimi, Tosuko follows her one day to a bookstore.

At first, she was hesitant to talk to Kimi, but she eventually revealed she could play the piano. It turned out Kimi played the guitar, and they were soon joined by Rui, who collected instruments and played the theremin. The story follows these music lovers as they become friends and support each other through life’s difficulties.

1) Lost in Starlight

Despite being the first Korean animated film released worldwide, Lost in Starlight hasn’t gained much attention this year. Visually, it’s a stunning sci-fi movie, blending old and new styles in a 2050 setting with a beautiful soundtrack. The story centers on Nan-young, a talented young scientist who hopes to lead a future Mars expedition. However, her supervisor keeps her on hold, fearing that the emotional pain from her mother’s death during a previous mission will affect her ability to perform.

He suggests she spend some time relaxing in Seoul, where she meets Jay, a musician who gave up on his dreams and now fixes old stereos. They begin to inspire each other to pursue what they want, and develop feelings for each other, all while knowing their time together might be limited.
