The show’s revival is facing a significant problem. One of the lead creators has left the project because of disagreements about the creative direction, shortly after filming started.
Tim Hobert is stepping down as co-showrunner of the upcoming Scrubs revival, leaving Aseem Batra as the sole showrunner. This change comes shortly after production began, but filming will continue without interruption. Hobert and Batra previously collaborated on the first episode of the reboot and both worked on the original Scrubs series. ABC ordered the revival directly to series in July, though a premiere date hasn’t been set. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley are all returning for the new season.
Hobert will continue to be listed as an executive producer for the first several episodes of the new series. He previously held various producer roles – including co-executive, executive, and consulting producer – on the original Scrubs. Batra, now the showrunner, also worked on Scrubs as a story editor and co-producer. Bill Lawrence will also return as an executive producer for the revival, continuing his involvement from the original series, as reported by Variety.
The upcoming reboot will introduce several new cast members. Joining the show are Ava Bunn as Serena, Jacob Dudman as Asher, David Gridley as Blake, Layla Mohammadi as Amara, and Amanda Morrow as Dashana. They will all be playing members of a new group of interns.
Okay, so I’m really excited about this! Vanessa Bayer, who’s hilarious from Saturday Night Live, is going to be playing a character named Sibby – she basically runs the wellness stuff for everyone at Sacred Heart Hospital. And Joel Kim Booster, who I loved in Loot and Kpop Demon Hunters, is joining the cast as Dr. Eric Park, one of the doctors. Apparently, they’re both going to be popping up throughout the season as recurring guest stars, which is awesome!
The upcoming Scrubs reboot hints that JD and Turk will be working together again after a long break. The new season will explore how much medicine has evolved since the show ended, and will introduce a fresh group of interns. Thankfully for fans, the strong friendship between JD and Turk remains intact. Both familiar and new characters will experience the ups and downs of life at Sacred Heart Hospital, with plenty of humor, heartfelt moments, and unexpected twists.
