Wicked: For Good first reactions are finally in – will it match success of first film?

Early reactions to the new ‘Wicked’ movie, ‘Wicked: For Good’, are coming in after its premiere in New York City on Monday, October 27th.

The highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s popular movie musical, Wicked, continues the story from the Broadway show. Cynthia Erivo will reprise her role as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande will return as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.

I’m thrilled to see so many familiar faces back for this! Jonathan Bailey is reprising his role as the charming Fiyero, and of course, we have the legendary Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard. Michelle Yeoh is also returning as the powerful Madame Morrible, and Marissa Bode will be back as Nessarose. It’s great to see the cast building on their previous work!

Director Jon M Chu promises “extraordinary” introductions for the new actors playing iconic characters from The Wizard of Oz – Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion – in the upcoming film.

But will Wicked: For Good match the success of the first film?

Many reviewers are praising the song “For Good,” with Jazz Tangcay of Variety calling it surprisingly excellent and a musical triumph. She also credited director Jon M. Chu with a masterful finale.

Meanwhile, Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford declared Chu has “done it again!”.

“It’s gorgeous, full of heart, and sticks the landing. A beautiful finale,” she wrote.

Chris Murphy from Vanity Fair complimented the film’s ending and called the performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande ‘jaw-dropping.’ He also noted that the movie creatively builds upon the original story in a compelling way.

Deadline’s Destiny Jackson described the movie as a powerfully emotional and satisfying ending to a beloved and memorable friendship, one that has become a significant part of popular culture.

Released in late 2024, Wicked: Part One quickly became a worldwide hit, earning praise from both critics and audiences and setting several box office records.

The film gained significant recognition during awards season, receiving ten Academy Award nominations and winning two Oscars for its Costume Design and Production Design – honors it had also previously earned at the BAFTAs.
