While it’s tempting to call Halls of Torment a copy of Vampire Survivors, that doesn’t quite capture it. It shares a similar basic structure and gameplay, but adds enough new ideas to create a distinct and unique experience.
The game perfectly captures the look of 90s computer games, specifically those with pre-rendered graphics, similar to early versions of Diablo. This gives it a really appealing and nostalgic charm.
Before exploring the game’s main areas, you select a character and then embark on 30-minute adventures. During these runs, you’ll be surrounded by enemies while collecting experience points to become more powerful.
You’ll find lots of helpful upgrades like power-ups, spells, and armor. You can even send armor back to the surface, so you’ll have it ready for your next try.
Honestly, figuring out how all the buffs and character combos actually work can be a little tricky at first. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like they’re making a huge difference, but you eventually get the hang of what clicks and what doesn’t. It just takes some playtime to really understand what works best for my playstyle.
The game also features a deeper progression system where you can permanently improve your stats using gold. Plus, you’ll complete lots of easy missions that give you even more items.
Every area presents its own challenges and dangers, but you’ll also meet helpful allies and powerful bosses to defeat.
Similar to Vampire Survivors, this game is incredibly addictive – you’ll lose track of time while playing. The feeling of making steady progress is perfectly balanced, and there’s just enough to manage – like unlocking new characters and levels, and improving your upgrades – to keep you fully engaged.
I’m completely hooked on Halls of Torment! It’s another fantastic take on that awesome feeling of starting weak and becoming incredibly powerful as you fight off wave after wave of enemies. The game looks amazing, there are tons of ways to build your character, and the more you play, the more options you unlock. Seriously, it’s one of those roguelites that just eats up all your free time – in the best way possible!
