Battlefield RedSec FAQ: Release date, cross-play, file size, and other questions about this new Battle Royale mode answered

Battlefield fans, get ready! Battlefield Labs has been secretly working on a new battle royale experience for Battlefield 6, and it’s now official. Battlefield Studios has announced Battlefield: RedSec, a unique battle royale mode that builds on everything players love about Battlefield. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about this mode and what sets it apart from other battle royales.

Is Battlefield RedSec Free to Play?

Yes, RedSec will be completely free to play. You won’t need to buy Battlefield 6 or pay for a subscription like Game Pass to play it. It’s a separate game, so anyone can download and start playing, even if they haven’t played Battlefield 6’s multiplayer.

When does Battlefield RedSec release?

The new mode will be available starting today, October 28, 2025, with a worldwide release beginning at 8 AM Pacific Time. That’s 11 AM Eastern Time or 3 PM in the UK. This launch coincides with the start of Battlefield 6’s Season 1, so we anticipate a large number of players will be online right away.

Will RedSec Share Progression with Battlefield 6?

As an analyst, I can confirm that player progress in Redsec will directly transfer to Battlefield 6. This means anything you’ve unlocked or achieved in Redsec will carry over, specifically including the following features and items…

  • Your Career Rank
  • Any Hardware Unlocks, such as: Gadgets, Weapons, Throwables and Training Paths
  • Your Hardware Progression, such as: Vehicle Loadout Items, Attachments, Camos, and Weapon Packages
  • Any Customization Items, such as: Soldier skins, Soldiers, Charms, Camos, Decals, Player Profile Backgrounds, Icons and your Dog Tags
  • Badges are also shared
  • There will also be shared Battle Pass Progress between Redsec and BF6

What Makes Battlefield’s RedSec Different from Warzone?

RedSec focuses on what makes Battlefield great – things like environments you can destroy, lots of vehicles, and teamwork. The safe zone in RedSec is much more dangerous than in Warzone; touching the edge of the shrinking area means instant elimination, while Warzone lets you survive briefly inside it.

Let’s be clear, this isn’t a permanent death situation. You get one free ‘respawn’ – a second chance, if you will. However, after that, it’s on your team. They’ll need to utilize the revive stations to get you back into the action. Essentially, your continued participation relies on their support.

I’m really excited about RedSec’s new mode, Gauntlet! It’s basically a squad-based race against other players to finish objectives. Think fast-paced PvP, but instead of just eliminating opponents, you’re also focused on completing missions before the other team does. It sounds like a really cool mix of action and strategy.

Battlefield now includes Portal, which lets players design their own unique game modes and experiences using the game’s creative tools. This opens up a world of possibilities for Redsec and extends gameplay far beyond typical matches.

Is the map new, or based on classic Battlefield locations?

The new map for RedSec, called Fort Lyndon, is the largest ever created for a Battlefield game and was specifically built for battle royale matches from the start.

What platforms is RedSec available on?

RedSec is launching today, October 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It’s built specifically for the latest generation of consoles and computers, so it won’t be compatible with older systems like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Do you need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass for Battlefield Redsec?

As a researcher following the launch of Battlefield Redsec, I can confirm you likely won’t need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core subscription to play it on either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. It’s designed as a free-to-play game, meaning online access shouldn’t be locked behind those usual subscription services, like many other games of this type.

The game is free to play, just like popular battle royale games such as Warzone and Fortnite, so you can start playing right away without needing a subscription. We’ll let you know if this changes in the future.

What is the RedSec file size?

If you’re upgrading from a previous Battlefield game, the install size for Battlefield 6 will be around 8GB on Xbox, and probably similar on PlayStation and PC. But, if you’re installing the game from scratch, it will require about 98GB of storage space.

What vehicles are available in RedSec?

RedSec revives the large-scale vehicle combat of Battlefield, letting players battle across land, water, and air. Expect a wide variety of vehicles like boats, tanks, jeeps, trucks, and even helicopters and jets depending on the map location.
