A recent article from Time Extension shared an interesting story about how Hideo Kojima almost made a video game inspired by the classic film, The Matrix.
Christopher Bergstresser, who used to work at Konami, says the Wachowskis—the filmmakers—were impressed with Hideo Kojima and asked him to create a game based on their movie.
The request was turned down because the team was busy developing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. You can find more details in the Time Extension article.
Hideo Kojima has clarified the situation on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he was never informed about any such discussion taking place.
He writes:
I saw The Matrix in the US and at a preview before it came out in Japan. When the Wachowskis visited Japan to promote the film, I think I met them on three separate occasions. One morning, we did an interview with Famitsu magazine in Shinjuku, and the artist Geof Darrow joined us. That afternoon, they visited Konami’s Computer Entertainment Division headquarters. At the time, I was a Vice President at KCE JAPAN, a company fully owned by Konami. When I got there, their meeting with Kasumi Kitaue, who ran the division, had just finished.
Kojima confirmed he went to a screening and party, but he states no one offered him the chance to make a Matrix video game.
He adds that he was already very occupied with working on Metal Gear Solid 2 and likely wouldn’t have been able to take on the project immediately.
“But if someone had told me, maybe there could’ve been a way to make it work.”
Apparently, Kojima wasn’t aware the Wachowskis had approached him about creating a video game based on The Matrix. While it wasn’t possible at the time, a collaboration could have happened later on.
Shiny Entertainment later had the chance to make a game based on The Matrix with 2003’s Enter the Matrix. While critics didn’t like it, many PlayStation 2 owners remember it fondly.
