The first month of the “Age of Revelation” event has been inconsistent, which is something X-Men readers have come to expect since Tom Brevoort began overseeing the X-Men line with “From the Ashes.” Many fans didn’t ask for this event, and some are even taking a break from the main X-Men books. However, X-Vengers #1 offers a compelling look at a dark future with a new Avengers team, and it showcases a historically underrated Marvel hero. This highlights a trend with this event: the tie-in books not focused on the X-Men are actually the most enjoyable.
“Age of Revelation” is struggling to gain traction, and early impressions suggest it’s not succeeding. While the core idea is somewhat interesting and there are moments of fun, it largely retreads familiar ground from previous X-Men stories. As someone who enjoyed both “Age of Apocalypse” and the non-mutant hero focus of X-Universe, I found X-Vengers particularly engaging. It features a compelling Avengers lineup, delivers exposition smoothly, and boasts exciting action, culminating in a surprising twist that launches the main storyline.
This issue centers on Dani Moonstar, who’s stepped into the role of Captain America and is truly shining. Dani has been a consistently strong character for years, but this is the moment she’s finally getting the spotlight she deserves. It’s incredibly satisfying to see her lead the Avengers, especially knowing the original Captain America personally chose her for the job. Jason Loo perfectly captures this new take on Dani, and she’s the heart of why this comic is so enjoyable. It’s a pleasure to follow her story. The supporting cast is also fantastic, blending lesser-known Avengers with some of the team’s biggest icons, creating a fun and engaging read.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
| Pros | Cons |
| Making Dani Moonstar the focus gives one of the most underrated mutants the perfect spotlight | The art is basic without a lot of stylistic flair |
| Fun fight scene against the Kree that drives the narrative | The last page could have been laid out better; the ending doesn’t seem as important because of panel size |
| The exposition feels natural |
X-Vengers #1’s Main Weakness Is the Basic Art

The only drawback to this book is the artwork. While the art isn’t bad – the action is clear, the details are consistent, and the characters look good – it lacks a distinctive style. Sergio Davila and Aure Jimenez are competent artists, but their work doesn’t quite capture the emotional weight of the story. Better art could have made this comic perfect, and it highlights a larger issue with Marvel’s artistic direction in 2025.
Marvel is increasingly hiring artists from other countries, which isn’t necessarily because of their talent, but because they offer lower rates. It’s well known in the comic book world that Marvel tries to keep costs down, and this is the primary reason for the influx of international artists – their money goes further overseas. While artists like Davila and Jimenez are just starting out and will likely improve, their current work feels somewhat simple and doesn’t particularly stand out. This also makes it difficult for readers to fully connect with the story’s emotional impact.
Overall, “The Age of Revelation” hasn’t been very engaging, but the issues that focus on characters outside of the X-Men are surprisingly good. It’s enjoyable to see regular heroes respond to the chaos caused by mutant events. The first issue of X-Vengers is a standout, especially for fans of Dani Moonstar and the Avengers – it’s a fast-paced, exciting story that should draw readers into the series. The artwork is decent, but it lacks the visual punch to really make the comic special.
