The show recently concluded a disturbing case that formed the core of the first two episodes of Season 3, revealing how someone exploited human behavior for personal gain. These episodes featured a strong partnership between Colter and his older brother, Russell, and viewers loved their dynamic, hoping the show would focus on the two of them working together. In a closing scene, Russell suggested he’d be interested in continuing to collaborate with his brother, which has generated excitement among fans. The show’s executive producer has also hinted at future possibilities. This raises the question of what the show will do with Jensen Ackles – will he become a regular on Tracker, or will he star in his own separate series?
Their teamwork is fantastic, and the brothers clearly have a lot of lost time to reconnect. While the show will likely continue to center around Colter traveling the country and taking on missing persons cases for money, anything could happen – the show has surprised us before with big changes over the last two seasons.
Colter Shaw Needed Russell to Stop The Process
Colter and Russell had successfully found a missing woman and her teenage daughter, but the case wasn’t fully closed. They discovered the kidnapper hadn’t acted alone – he’d been forced to take them hostage to protect his sister. While Colter felt they needed to investigate further, Russell was eager to celebrate with drinks and a steak. However, before they could even leave, new developments forced them to continue working on the case.
When the man’s sister was found dead, the person behind “The Process” was furious someone had interfered. They sent threatening texts, promising consequences. Russell was now involved in the case, whether he wanted to be or not, and had to keep investigating. In the second episode, “Leverage,” Colter introduces Russell to Randy, deepening Russell’s involvement in the operation. The two brothers then work seamlessly together to outsmart and capture the dangerous head of this ruthless group.
Ultimately, the brothers uncover the culprit’s identity: a former student of a retired psychology professor who studied how people change their behavior when under pressure. The professor once led a classroom experiment focused on influence and obedience, but she stopped it when she noticed some students were becoming disturbingly cruel. She remembers three students who repeatedly asked her to restart the experiment, and it turns out one of them is the perpetrator. Colter and Russell then team up to stop him.
Russell Wants to Help People Like Colter
Russell is bold, impulsive, and doesn’t always think things through, while Colter is reserved, thoughtful, and prefers predictability. Despite their differences, they work well together. After years of being distant, Russell now seems to understand how they balance each other out.
Driving away, Colter asks Russell about their plans, and Russell admits he usually makes decisions as he goes. However, he sounds tired of that approach. He starts outlining exactly what Colter does – essentially, being his own boss, using his abilities to make a difference, and helping those in need. He asks Colter for advice, but it’s also clear he’s subtly suggesting they work together as partners. Russell notes that Colter seems to have a successful setup, although he jokingly excludes the Airstream lifestyle.
Colter seems to either miss the point or deliberately ignore it. His brother should know Colter prefers to work solo and enjoys his independence. Russell keeps gazing out the window, talking about wanting to contribute to something bigger. He’s practically begging Colter to let him join him permanently.
Colter, typically private, quickly shifts the conversation to avoid an uncomfortable moment. This has led fans to speculate about Russell’s potential return, which seems likely in some form. Russell is eager to move past the issue, but recognizes Colter is still struggling and wants to support him. He even offers to investigate a phone number found among their father’s things and promises to be there for Colter when he’s ready to face his mother.
Russell’s return to the show might not be a one-time thing, potentially leading to changes in the main cast. While Jensen Ackles, who plays Russell, is currently working on the final season of The Boys and a prequel called Vought Rising, many actors successfully juggle multiple TV series at once.
The Team Behind Tracker May Be Setting Up a Spinoff
The discussion between Colter and Russell hints that the world of Tracker could be expanded with a spin-off show. Elwood Reid, the executive producer of Tracker, has suggested this possibility. This conversation between the brothers was likely meant to offer clues about what a spin-off might look like, potentially exploring different investigative techniques used by Russell and broadening the Tracker universe on television.
The idea is intriguing, but there’s a lot of similarity between this new concept and the existing storyline of the brothers mending their relationship and investigating their father’s death. It would be more logical to combine the character Russell into the Tracker series. While giving Russell his own show allows for potential crossovers, it raises the question of why not simply feature both characters on the same show, given the strong chemistry and appealing dynamic between them. This would be a shift from the show’s original plan, but series often change direction, and that’s okay.
According to Reid, Jensen and Justin Hartley bring unique qualities to their roles and complement each other wonderfully on screen. Reid would welcome more appearances from Jensen whenever his schedule allows, suggesting the decision to expand his role ultimately rests with Ackles. Despite Ackles’ commitments, Reid enjoys subtly hinting at storylines where Russell could follow a similar path to his brother, both to playfully tease Ackles and to see how audiences might react to the idea.
The show Tracker began with Colter getting help from his lawyer friend Reenie, hacker Bobby, and team members Teddi and Velma. Teddi left after the first season, and Randy became a regular cast member. Justin Hartley is excellent as the lead, but with fewer supporting characters, the show needs a way to stay fresh beyond just new guest stars each week. It might not happen this season, but the creators should consider expanding the focus to include other ‘trackers’ in the future. Despite any potential issues, I’d still tune in – would you?
