Hideo Kojima Says He Was Never Told About The Matrix Creators Wanting Him to Make a Game

I was so surprised to hear about this! Apparently, the Wachowskis, who made The Matrix, actually reached out to Konami about making a game with Hideo Kojima – the genius behind Metal Gear. But get this: Kojima himself says he never knew anything about it! He did share on social media that he actually met the Wachowskis before The Matrix even came out in Japan, and he even went to the premiere. It’s wild to think about what could have been, and even more surprising that he wasn’t in the loop!

Kojima recently discovered, through social media, that the Wachowski sisters had apparently approached him about a Matrix game project way back in 1999. He was surprised because, despite the 26 years that have passed, no one had ever mentioned this conversation to him before.

Kojima shared that he and the Wachowskis had exchanged emails, as they both admired each other’s work. He’d even seen The Matrix in US theaters before it was released in Japan.

Kojima recalled meeting the Wachowskis three times during their promotional visit to Japan. He said they started the day with an interview at Famitsu in Shinjuku, which also included artist Geof Darrow. Later that afternoon, the Wachowskis were guests at Konami’s Computer Entertainment Division headquarters.

In the end, Kojima said he probably wouldn’t have been able to work on The Matrix because he was already deeply involved with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. He added that if he’d known about the opportunity earlier, he would have found a way to make it work.

He explained that he was deeply involved with developing Metal Gear Solid 2 at the time and likely wouldn’t have been able to take on the project immediately. However, he added that if someone had presented a solution, he might have been able to find a way to make it happen.

This week, Christopher Bergstresser, a former Konami executive, discussed a meeting between the Wachowskis (creators of The Matrix) and Konami. Although Konami turned down a *Matrixthemed project proposed by Hideo Kojima, Bergstresser mentioned that Kojima himself was also there.

According to Bergstresser, the Wachowskis were huge admirers of Hideo Kojima. He recalls being at Konami headquarters with Kojima, Aki Saito, and Kazumi Kitaue when they received a call from the Wachowskis requesting a meeting. The meeting happened soon after!

A pair of executives arrived with a concept artist and asked Hideo Kojima if he’d be interested in making a game based on The Matrix. Aki translated their request for Kitaue-san, but he immediately and directly told them it wasn’t going to happen. Despite that, we still had the opportunity to attend the Japanese premiere and afterparty for The Matrix.

Although Hideo Kojima’s vision for a Matrix game never materialized, the films inspired several games, including Enter the Matrix, The Matrix Online, and Path of Neo. More recently, The Matrix Awakens was released as a tech demo, highlighting the power of the Unreal Engine 5.
