Football Manager might seem like a simple spreadsheet game, but endlessly buying and selling players won’t get you far without a solid strategy for Football Manager 2026.
The game now features a completely revamped tactical system with distinct roles for when your team has the ball and when they don’t, and you might be finding it a bit tricky to learn.
If you want a quick way to improve your results, here are three simple strategies you can use right away. Feel free to customize them to fit your needs and start seeing success!
To make things easier, you can click on any of the following to go straight to the tactic you want:
- 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress
- 5-2-1-2 Wing Play
- Standard 4-4-2
FM26 tactics: 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress

The 4-2-3-1 gegenpress, a long-time favorite strategy in Football Manager, remains just as effective in FM26.
A strong defense, with four players and support from two midfielders, forms the foundation of a successful team. This allows your attackers to pressure the opposition, win possession, and control the game.
If your opponents are frequently getting balls past your defenders, consider setting your Defensive Line to a more conservative approach like ‘Standard’.

FM26 tactics: 5-2-1-2 Wing Play

Okay, so seeing five players defending might make you think it’s super defensive, but trust me, it’s actually a really aggressive setup. It’s designed to push forward and score a ton of goals! Just be warned – if your goalie and center-backs aren’t top-notch, you’re going to be letting in a lot of goals too. It’s a high-risk, high-reward kind of thing.
We’re starting with an aggressive press, but if you’re consistently losing the ball over long passes, feel free to switch to a more moderate defensive approach.

FM26 tactics: Standard 4-4-2

If you’re managing a team in a lower division and don’t have highly skilled players, this 4-4-2 formation is a great option for you.
This formation relies on a strong defense with four players at the back, shielded by two defensive midfielders. It focuses on quick counter-attacks using wingers to deliver the ball to the forwards.
If you want, you can use a central forward as a target player to build your attacks around. This can help bring other attackers into play or create scoring opportunities.
