Doctor Who is returning for a new season, and along with that exciting news, showrunner Russell T Davies has a chance to address a major plot point from the last season. The previous season ended with a surprising twist: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed into Billie Piper, who now appears to be taking on the role of the Sixteenth Doctor.
The decision to cast Piper as the Doctor feels like a step too far. While bringing back past Doctors is common, turning a companion into a Doctor is something else entirely. Not only could this diminish Rose Tyler’s character arc, but it feels repetitive after the unexpected regeneration of Jodie Whittaker into David Tennant in the 2022 special, “The Power of the Doctor.”
Doctor Who’s 2026 Plan Provides A Route Away From Billie Piper Being A Full-Time Doctor
Given Billie Piper’s current role in the show, the most effective approach would be to have her play a temporary Doctor, much like David Tennant did recently. She could appear in a single episode or a short series of specials before handing the role over to a new, full-time Doctor.
The future of Doctor Who looks secure. The BBC has confirmed a Christmas special is planned for 2026, and they’ve also indicated that more episodes will follow, promising to share details about a new series soon.
Since a special episode is planned for 2026, but a new full season doesn’t have a confirmed release date, it seems likely Billie Piper will only be returning as the Doctor for these holiday specials, and not as a permanent cast member.
Past Christmas specials of Doctor Who have sometimes been seen as bridging the gaps between seasons. So, the announcement of just one special in 2026 suggests Billie Piper’s character will play a key role in transitioning the Doctor, preparing the TARDIS for a new face before season 16 starts.
The BBC has over a year to find the next Doctor Who. Because Ncuti Gatwa is leaving and the agreement with Disney has ended, finding a replacement quickly proved challenging. Now that Doctor Who is taking a year-long break (excluding spin-off shows), the BBC has time to choose a new lead actor and plan the show’s future independently.
If This Is Doctor Who’s Plan, Billie Piper’s Return Makes Perfect Sense
Let’s picture how different things would be if Ncuti Gatwa’s arrival as the Doctor had followed the usual pattern: a formal announcement of the new actor beforehand, and his first appearance at the conclusion of “The Reality War.”
If that actor hadn’t been chosen, the future of their role in the show would have been very uncertain, and both Disney and the BBC would have been quiet about Doctor Who‘s plans. It would have taken almost a year and a half before the first episode of the new season finally aired in December 2026. Even after that Christmas special, it still wouldn’t have been clear when the rest of the season would be ready.
Honestly, asking any actor to sign on with everything so up in the air felt like a huge ask. Getting someone already familiar with the show – Billie Piper was a genius move, really – to fill in until Doctor Who got back on solid ground? That was probably the smartest thing Russell T Davies could have done. It bought them time and kept things moving forward.
The transition from Jodie Whittaker to David Tennant was handled in a similar way. When Whittaker announced she was leaving, it was obvious the next Doctor would be central to the show’s 60th anniversary. It wouldn’t have been right to put that much pressure on someone new, so bringing back a popular actor like David Tennant was a logical choice.
Billie Piper is taking a similar path to her old Doctor Who colleague, and although some fans might be surprised to see Rose Tyler changing into the Doctor, it could be successful – as long as Piper only appears in a single Christmas special.
