A Game Boy Advance game originally released in 2005 is being re-released in early 2026 for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, it won’t be available on PlayStation 4, the next Nintendo Switch console (though it will be playable on that system through backward compatibility), or any Xbox platforms. A specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.
The game we’re talking about is Sigma Star Saga, a sci-fi RPG and shooter originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2005 by WayForward Technologies (now known as WayForward). It wasn’t a huge hit when it first came out – reviews were mixed and it received a score of 68 on Metacritic – so it’s a bit unexpected to see it making a comeback.
About the Port
While WayForward is assisting with the project, Mighty Rabbit Studios is the primary developer responsible for bringing the game to new platforms. This release isn’t a full remake, but rather an enhanced port of the original. It includes all the original content and gameplay, with some improvements and tweaks. These changes include a better map, more save points, and updated dialogue. The developers also addressed common criticisms of the original game by reducing random encounters, refining character hitboxes, adjusting auto-fire, and rebalancing the experience point system.
About the Game
If you haven’t heard of Sigma Star Saga DX, it’s a unique game that blends two genres. Half of it is a story-focused sci-fi adventure seen from above, and the other half is a fast-paced, side-scrolling shooter. You take on the role of Ian Recker, a skilled pilot from Earth tasked with going undercover within the alien Krill empire to destroy them. Throughout the game, you’ll explore various planets, encounter interesting characters, and upgrade your ship with powerful weapons.
Following a Game Boy Advance game re-release last month, another classic is coming back this month. With Nintendo Switch Online also offering access to these older titles, fans have been enjoying a wave of Game Boy Advance nostalgia, and it seems this trend will continue into next year.
