So, Battlefield 6 finally got its free battle royale mode, called Battlefield: RedSec, but honestly, the launch hasn’t gone as smoothly as EA probably hoped. I noticed on Steam that it was getting a lot of negative reviews at first, which really brought the overall rating down. It’s improved a little since then – it’s now ‘Mixed’ – but still, only about 41% of players are giving it a positive review right now. It’s a bit disappointing, to be honest, because I was really excited for this!
Many players are unhappy with Battlefield: RedSec because unlocking items in the Battlefield 6 battle pass requires playing the battle royale mode. Some reviewers have said they just want to enjoy the main Battlefield 6 game and don’t want to be forced to play battle royale to complete challenges and make progress.
One player explained they wouldn’t mind the game as much if they weren’t required to play it for in-game challenges. However, they are, and that’s why they dislike it – it’s not what they expected when they purchased Battlefield 6.
One player pointed out that EA appears to be heavily promoting Battlefield: RedSec. They noticed that when unwanted weekly challenges are reset, players often receive new objectives that specifically focus on the battle royale mode.
The reviewer pointed out that players can simply retry challenges. Another commenter added that three of those challenges still heavily promote the Battle Royale mode, even to players who have no interest in it.
Many negative reviews also mention the map sizes in Battlefield 6 still feel too cramped. Players are particularly frustrated because RedSec has a much larger map and allows for more widespread destruction, making the contrast noticeable.
One player praised a map they encountered, noting its size, numerous points of interest, and good flanking routes. They expressed a wish that the main game could feature similar map design.
The new battle royale mode, Battlefield: RedSec, launched this week with the season 1 update for Battlefield 6. Twenty-five teams of four players compete to be the last one remaining. Like many battle royales, RedSec features a shrinking safe zone to encourage combat. But with a unique spin, entering the dangerous zone in RedSec instantly eliminates players, unlike other games where you can try to survive within it during long battles.
Like Battlefield 6, RedSec includes drivable combat vehicles that players can use to battle each other. Before the game mode launched, some players worried these vehicles might be too strong, especially if players on foot didn’t have the right weapons, like a rocket launcher, to fight back. However, lead producer David Sirland assured players that they have plans to address this potential issue without relying solely on those types of weapons.
Battlefield: RedSec and Battlefield 6 are both available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
