Netflix’s The Witcher has faced a lot of challenges. After Henry Cavill left after Season 3, it seemed like Netflix might cancel the show. Liam Hemsworth stepped in to play Geralt of Rivia for the final two seasons. Surprisingly, a spin-off that was previously canceled—following the poor performance of Blood Origins and Sirens of the Deep—just launched alongside Season 4. However, fans are unsure what this low-key release means for the future of the series.
Both Season 4 of The Witcher and the The Rats spin-off special are now available on Netflix. While Season 4, starring Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, was the main event, Netflix surprised viewers by also releasing The Rats on October 30th. This gives fans even more to enjoy from the Witcher universe.
Originally, The Witcher: The Rats was planned as a short, separate story, similar to Blood Origins. The series would have centered on The Rats – the band of outlaws Ciri joins towards the end of Season 3. This group is crucial to Ciri’s development in the original Witcher novels, and the show would have delved deeper into their stories with new plotlines not found in the books. Unfortunately, the production faced even more difficulties than the controversy surrounding Henry Cavill leaving the show.
