It’s been more than 9 years since Pokemon Go first became a huge hit in the summer of 2016. The game has evolved a lot since then, but the core gameplay remains the same: explore the real world, catch Pokemon, battle, and keep playing. However, even after 9 years, some surprisingly popular Pokemon are still missing from the game. Niantic, the game’s developer, is trying to avoid getting ahead of the main Pokemon video games and running out of content, which has led to some unexpected omissions.
It’s not surprising that some of the newest Pokemon from the Scarlet & Violet games haven’t been added to Pokemon Go yet, as it usually takes time for Pokemon from the latest main series games to appear. However, it’s been a while, and some Pokemon from as far back as Pokemon Sun and Moon are still missing from the mobile game. Here are 5 Pokemon I find it hard to believe haven’t been released in Pokemon Go after all this time.
5. Maschiff

Maschiff is a recent addition, appearing in the ninth generation of Pokémon. However, its absence from Pokémon Go is a bit unexpected, especially considering other popular Pokémon have been added. While we’ve already seen Fidough, another Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, introduced, prioritizing this admittedly cute Pokémon feels like an odd choice.
Fidough is a cute Pokémon, but Maschiff plays a bigger role in the story of Scarlet & Violet. Its evolved form, Mabosstiff, is actually part of the game’s plot! Considering how many other dog Pokémon exist, it’s surprising we haven’t gotten Maschiff yet. It’s been almost three years since Scarlet & Violet came out, and I really want to complete my Pokémon Go collection with all the adorable dog Pokémon, including Maschiff!
4. Wishiwashi

Wishiwashi is a Pokemon that first appeared in the Pokemon Sun and Moon games. Considering how often Niantic restricts certain Pokemon to areas near water in Pokemon Go, it’s surprising that this small fish Pokemon isn’t yet available in the mobile game.
We might not have seen Wishiwashi in Pokémon Go yet because it changes appearance – it has a Solo Form and a Schooling Form. Pokémon Go didn’t previously have Pokémon that transformed like this, but with the addition of Morpeko, that’s now possible. I predict Wishiwashi, also known as the Small Fry Pokémon, will be added to the game soon, likely tied to the Water Biome.
3. Type: Null

Type: Null and its evolved form, Sivally, were introduced in the seventh generation of Pokémon games but haven’t yet appeared in Pokémon Go. Considering how important Ultra Beasts have been to Pokémon Go lately, it’s surprising these two Pokémon are still missing.
Being a Legendary Pokémon, Niantic is probably planning a big event for this unique creature. However, considering how many other Legendaries have been released in Pokémon Go over time, it’s surprising we haven’t seen Type: Null yet. Because it was created as a strange experiment, I’m hoping its introduction will come with a compelling story and special quests.
2. Arceus

Arceus first appeared in the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games back in Generation 4. It’s surprising that this legendary Pokémon hasn’t been added to Pokémon Go yet, especially considering its important role in the more recent Legends: Arceus game. Because Arceus is known as the ‘Original One’ and often referred to as a Pokémon God by fans, many believe Niantic is holding onto it for a significant event or release.
Despite expectations, the 2024 Pokemon Go Tour: Sinnoh didn’t feature Arceus. The event highlighted the Legendary Pokemon Palkia and Dialga from Diamond and Pearl. It’s uncertain when Arceus will be added to Pokemon Go, but its arrival will likely be a major event.
1. Mimikyu

Mimikyu is the Pokémon that started this whole discussion. Players of Pokémon Go have been requesting this Pikachu look-alike, who wears a disguise, for years. However, it still hasn’t appeared in the game, even during Halloween events. At first, people thought it was because Mimikyu has two different forms, making it difficult to implement. But with the recent addition of Morpeko, a Pokémon that can change forms from Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, that reason no longer makes sense.
Mimikyu first appeared in the Pokemon Sun and Moon games. It’s interesting that, even though Pokemon Sun and Moon and Pokemon Go were both released in the same year, many Pokemon from those games haven’t been added to the mobile app yet. Niantic, the company behind Pokemon Go, might be holding Mimikyu back for a special event. If not the 10-year anniversary of both games, it’s hard to guess what that event might be.
I’m so excited about the future of Pokémon Go! I’m really curious – which Pokémon are you hoping Niantic adds to the game next? Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come share your wishlist and let’s talk Pokémon!
