October wasn’t a strong month for movie theaters. Aside from a few special events like Taylor Swift’s concert release and the re-release of the popular series Kpop Demon Hunters, there weren’t many big hits. Several new movies disappointed, with The Smashing Machine having the lowest opening weekend of Dwayne Johnson’s career and Tron: Ares likely ending the Tron film series. However, there’s optimism for November and December, with hopes that the year will finish strongly. The upcoming release of Wicked: For Good is expected to significantly boost ticket sales.
Sources say the new movie Wicked: For Good is expected to bring in between $112 and $115 million in North America during its opening weekend. This is similar to how the first Wicked movie performed last year, earning $112.5 million. If accurate, this would make Wicked: For Good one of the year’s biggest movie launches, placing it among the top five highest-grossing opening weekends of 2025.
- A Minecraft Movie ($162.7 million)
- Lilo & Stitch ($146 million)
- Superman ($125 million)
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($117.6 million)
- Wicked: For Good ($112-115 million projection)
Can Wicked: For Good Exceed Box Office Projections?

Predicting movie success has been particularly difficult since the pandemic changed how people go to the movies. This year, several films actually performed better than expected, exceeding initial predictions. This was especially true for horror movies like Sinners, Weapons, and The Conjuring: Last Rites, which had huge opening weekends. However, films from other genres also surprised audiences – A Minecraft Movie broke records, and Superman benefited from good word-of-mouth to achieve a strong start.
With the release of Wicked: For Good, audiences can expect a major cinematic event, especially during the holiday season. Like The Conjuring: Last Rites before it, framing this film as the conclusion to a popular story is likely to draw large crowds to theaters. Early buzz surrounding Wicked: For Good is already very positive, with many praising the performances of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, as well as director Jon M. Chu’s handling of the story. If full reviews match this initial excitement, the film could be even more successful than expected.
Last year, Wicked and Gladiator II competed for moviegoers, despite appealing to different crowds. This time, Wicked: For Good doesn’t face a similar challenge. While other films like Rental Family and Sisu: Road to Revenge are opening around the same time, they aren’t expected to significantly impact ticket sales. Disney’s Zootopia 2 comes out during Thanksgiving, but since the first Wicked movie did well alongside Moana 2, it’s likely both films can succeed. Wicked: For Good could very well exceed predictions.
November is looking like a much stronger month for movies than October, with several exciting releases planned. In addition to Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2, audiences can look forward to Predator: Badlands – which is already getting good reviews – and Edgar Wright’s The Running Man. This is good news for theaters, and will help set up Avatar: Fire and Ash for a successful run during the busy Christmas season. The final two months of 2025 have the potential to bring some of the year’s biggest box office hits.
