The highly anticipated The Outer Worlds 2 is now available, offering players a vast and colorful sci-fi world to explore and tons of powerful weapons and equipment to collect. Interestingly, a special, one-of-a-kind weapon is hidden right on your ship, The Incognito.
It looks tough to get this awesome gun early in the game, but you can actually unlock it right after the opening sequence. Plus, the more you use it, the stronger it becomes!
Okay, so I’ve been digging around and figured out everything about getting the Rookie’s Reward SMG in The Outer Worlds 2! I’ve got the details on how to unlock the case it’s hidden in – there’s even a sneaky little trick involved – and I’ll let you know if I think it’s actually a good weapon to use when you’re exploring the game. Basically, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned so you don’t have to spend hours figuring it out yourself!
How do you get the Rookie’s Reward unique weapon in The Outer Worlds 2?

After the brief introduction in The Outer Worlds 2 – once you’re awake and reach Paradise Island on Eden – you’ll be able to freely explore The Incognito, your spaceship and base of operations.
You’ll immediately gain access to a brand new weapon when you start playing. Here’s how to get it, explained simply:
- Find the room in The Incognito with the Workstation, various lockers, and the locked cabinet.
- Ignore the cabinet (it requires a Lockpicking skill of 11, which is very high), and turn toward the Workstation.
- Climb on top of the boxes stacked in the corner next to the Workstation, and find the lever hidden behind them.
- Interact with this lever to power down the cabinet and disable its lock.
- Return to the cabinet and collect your prize, the Rookie’s Reward unique weapon.
I wish I’d found out about this sooner! The Rookie’s Reward is a really cool weapon, and it actually gets better the more you use it.
What does the Rookie’s Reward gun do in The Outer Worlds 2?

The Rookie’s Reward is a simple, fully automatic submachine gun, as its description suggests. Unlike many of the game’s special weapons, it doesn’t offer any unique effects or damage types – its modification doesn’t fundamentally change how it works.
The Rookie’s Reward also gets stronger as you play! It earns experience from every enemy you defeat and levels up over time. Each level permanently boosts its damage, how fast it fires, and how much ammo it holds. Plus, you’ll get a fun confetti explosion each time it levels up!
The Rookie’s Reward lets you level up fast, and you’ll see the benefits right away. The gun starts out a bit weak – it’s slow to fire and doesn’t hold much ammo – but even at level 12, when I discovered it, I could still hold my own in battles, and that was without investing any skill points or perks into gun skills.
After playing for about an hour, my starting gun, the Rookie’s Reward, had leveled up to 5 and was much better at defeating enemies. I think there’s a level cap for the gun – maybe level 30, like the player level – but I haven’t gotten it there yet, so I’m not sure.
I really like the Rookie’s Reward and plan to keep using it. My only issue is that you can’t attach a barrel mod, which means I can’t add a silencer or change the type of damage it does. Other than that, it’s a really fun and different weapon, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it improves over time.
FAQ
What is The Outer Worlds 2?
The Outer Worlds 2 is the newest game from Obsidian Entertainment, a leading studio owned by Xbox. Continuing the style of the original The Outer Worlds, it’s a sci-fi role-playing game with a large, explorable world, colorful graphics, and a quirky, often dark, sense of humor. Is The Outer Worlds 2 worth playing?
The Outer Worlds 2 is a game worth checking out, and critics have been generally positive about it. We at Windows Central gave it a “Must Play” award and a score of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Having played it myself, I’m really enjoying it, though if you didn’t like the original The Outer Worlds, this sequel probably won’t change your mind.
Do I need to play The Outer Worlds 1 first?
As a big fan of the Outer Worlds, I’ve been thinking about how the games connect. While both titles exist within the same universe, the stories are actually pretty separate. I definitely still recommend checking out the first game – I think it’s a blast – but you absolutely don’t *need* to finish it before diving into The Outer Worlds 2. You can jump right into the sequel and still have a fantastic experience without any confusion!
How long is The Outer Worlds 2?
The length of The Outer Worlds 2 varies depending on how you play, just like with most role-playing games. Most players will probably spend between 30 and 40 hours finishing it. If you focus on the main story, you could beat it in around 20-25 hours, but completionists like myself can easily get 50+ hours of gameplay.
Which version of The Outer Worlds 2 should I buy?
The standard version of The Outer Worlds 2 is a great choice for most players and is currently available for $55.79 at Loaded.com on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC.
