Following the release of their new shooter game, ARC Raiders, Embark Studios has confirmed they didn’t use generative AI during development. In an interview with GamesRadar, studio co-founder Stefan Strandberg explained that they only used AI-powered technology for creating voiceovers from text.
According to Strandberg, the amount of AI used in ARC Raiders is similar to what they use in THE FINALS. The studio focuses on combining recordings from actual actors with text-to-speech technology. He explained, āWe blend recordings of real actors and TTS, and that applies to this game too.ā
Regarding future development, Remedy Entertainment has no plans to replace actors in their games with AI. According to studio head Sam Lake, the goal isn’t to eliminate actors, as there’s a special quality that comes from having real people contribute to the game’s story and world.
Strandberg explained that the studio is using text-to-speech technology to build expansive game worlds, even with a small development team. He emphasized they’re focused on creating detailed environments efficiently, but aren’t currently using generative AI in other areas of game development.
Embark Studiosā new game, ARC Raiders, launched recently on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S and appears to be a big hit. Within just a few hours of release, the PC version reached over 165,000 concurrent players, and that number has since climbed to a peak of 264,000+ in the last 24 hours. Importantly, these numbers only reflect players on PC ā console player counts are not included.
Embark Studios isnāt abandoning ARC Raiders; they plan to keep supporting it with new updates and content. However, the company is also working on two unannounced projects. CEO Patrick Sƶderlund recently shared this news, adding that while online gaming is a core part of Embarkās identity, their future projects arenāt necessarily all online games.
Sƶderlund clarified that their games won’t necessarily be like online shooters such as THE FINALS or ARC Raiders. He explained that one of their concepts is darker and grittier than those games, while another is more traditional in its approach.
Ultimately, Sƶderlund envisions Embark Studios as a studio celebrated for both its innovation and its dedication to its players. He explained that their aim is to be a positive force in the gaming industry, prioritizing respect for players by actively listening to their feedback and consistently improving their games based on that input.
